This study aims to explore the practical applicability of theatrical rehearsal methodologies to long-take direction in contemporary film and OTT series production, based on the rehearsal process of the Netflix original series Adolescence. The series attracted 24.3 million viewers within four days of its release and maintained the top position on Netflix’s global streaming chart for more than ten days. Its “One Continuity Shot, One Episode” production format is particularly notable in that the actors, camera operators, and technical staff performed in a unified rhythm similar to live theatrical performance. Adolescence was produced over a twelve-week schedule, during which each of the four episodes underwent two weeks of rehearsal followed by one week of filming. Director Philip Barantini divided the rehearsal period into actor-centered and technically focused stages, adopting a structured approach closely aligned with theatrical rehearsal practices. Accordingly, this study analyzes the series’ rehearsal process in relation to the principles of blocking rehearsals and technical rehearsals grounded in theatrical methodology, drawing upon the aesthetic characteristics of the long take and the structural stages of theater rehearsal. This study acknowledges its limitation in that the analysis is confined to a single work, and therefore does not include comparative examinations of other production models. Nevertheless, it is anticipated that the findings will contribute to re-situating rehearsal within contemporary film and OTT production contexts—not merely as a procedure for technical efficiency, but as a collaborative creative process shared by both actors and technical staff.

본 연구는 넷플릭스 <소년의 시간>(Adolescence)의 리허설 방법론 연구를 바탕으로 현대 영화 및 OTT 시리즈 제작 현장에서 롱테이크(Long-take) 연출 시에 적용할 수 있는 연극적 리허설 방법론의 실천적 가능성 을 모색하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 넷플릭스 오리지널 시리즈 <소년의 시간>(Adolescence)은 공개 4일 만에 2430만 명의 시청자를 모았으며 10일 넘게 넷플릭스 스트리밍 1위를 차지하는 성과를 거두었다. 해당 작품이 보여준 ‘One Continuity Shot, One Episode’촬영 방식은 배우와 카메라·기술 스탭이 연극 무대 공연처럼 하나의 호흡으로 장면을 구현했다는 점에서 주목할 만하다. <소년의 시간>(Adolescence)은 12주간의 프로덕 션 기간에 에피소드별로 각기 2주간의 리허설, 1주간의 촬영 기간을 거쳐 총 4개의 에피소드를 완성하였다. 감독인 필립 바랜티니(Philip Barantini)는 2주 간의 리허설을 배우 중심과 기술 중심으로 구분하여 체계적인 리허설 작업을 진행하였다. 이는 연극 리허설 과정과 매우 유사한 방식을 띄고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 롱 테이크 연출의 미학적 특성과 연극 리허설의 단계별 구성 원리를 토대로 <소년의 시간>(Adolescence)의 리허설 과정을 연극 의 블로킹 리허설(Blocking Rehearsal)과 테크니컬 리허설(Technical Rehearsal)방법론을 적용하여 고찰하였다. 본 연구는 분석 대상이 하나의 작품에 국한되어 있어 여타 다른 작품의 제작 방식과 구체적 비교 분석이 이루어지지 않은 한계를 내포하고 있음을 밝힌다. 본 연구가 기술과 효율성 중심으로 운영되는 현대의 리허설 방식에서 벗어나 배우와 스탭 모두가 공동 창작의 창조적 기능으로 활용될 수 있는 리허설 방법론을 개발하는데 실질적인 기여를 할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.
