This study aims to examine, from a philosophical perspective, the essential meaning of the actor’s existence and role in the contemporary performance environment, where artificial intelligence (AI) has expanded into the realm of artistic creation. Focusing on the concept of mimesis proposed by Plato and Aristotle, this research compares the expressive acts of human actors with the representational functions performed by AI. For Plato, imitation is a mere shadow of The Idea, a step removed from truth, whereas for Aristotle, it constitutes a creative and cognitive act. Extending this philosophical contrast to the present context, AI’s “technical representation” remains within the Platonic sphere of imitation, while the “embodied expression of emotion and consciousness” achieved by human actors aligns with the Aristotelian notion of creative mimesis. Through analyses of performances employing holograms, virtual actors, and deepfake technologies, this study concludes that although AI can computationally reconstruct emotional logic, it cannot embody the integrated consciousness and authenticity inherent in human performance. However, as this research is primarily philosophical in nature, it does not empirically examine the transformative effects of AI on acting practice. Future studies should therefore explore practical methodologies through which actors may redefine themselves as creative practitioners at the intersection of technology and art. Therefore, the purpose of this study is not to discuss the simple confrontation between human actors and artificial intelligence (AI), but to clarify the nature of acting as a creative act unique to humans. In addition, beyond theoretical discussions, we intend to explore the possibility of creation that transcends technological imitation by analyzing cases in which artificial intelligence technology was used in actual performance sites.

본 연구는 인공지능(AI)이 창작의 영역까지 확장된 현대 연기환경 속에서 배우의 존재와 역할이 어떠한 본질적 의미를 지니는지를 철학적 관점에서 고찰하는 데 목적이 있다. 특히 플라톤과 아리스토텔레스가 제시한 ‘모방(mimesis)’ 개념을 중심으로, 인간 배우의 표현 행위와 인공지능이 구현하는 재현적 기능을 비교·분석하였다. 플라톤에게 모방은 ‘이데아의 그림자’로서 진리로부터 한 단계 떨어진 허상에 불과하지만, 아리스토텔레스에게는 창조적 행위에 해당한다. 이러한 철학적 대립을 현대적 맥락으로 확장하면, 인공지능이 수행하는 ‘기술적 재현’은 플라톤적 모방의 영역에 머무르며, 인간 배우의 ‘감정과 의식의 체화’는 아리스토텔레스적 모방의 차원에 해당한다고 볼 수 있다. 본 연구는 홀로그램과 가상 배우를 활용한 무대 공연, 딥페이크 기술을 활용한 영상 매체의 사례를 연구한다. 이를 통해 인공지능은 감정의 논리적 구조를 계산적으로 재현할 수는 있으나, 인간 배우처럼 체화된 경험과 의식의 통합을 통해 ‘살아 있는 존재로서의 진정성’을 구현하기는 어렵다는 결론에 도달하였다. 다만 본 연구는 인공지능 시대에서 배우의 예술적 창조성과 감성적 체험의 의미를 철학적으로 조명하였으나, 실제 무대 현장에서 인공지능 기술이 배우의 창조적 행위에 어떠한 변화를 일으키는지 실증적 분석이 이루어지지 못한 한계를 지닌다. 향후 연구에서는 기술적·예술적 변화를 종합적으로 탐구하여, 배우가 기술과 예술의 경계를 재정의하는 창조적 실천자로 자리매김할 수 있는 구체적 방안을 모색할 필요가 있다. 따라서 본 연구의 목적은 인간 배우와 인공지능(AI)의 단순한 대립 구도를 논하는 데 있지 않으며, 인간 고유의 창조적 행위로서 연기의 본질을 규명하는 데 있다. 또한 이론적 논의를 넘어 실제 공연 현장에서 인공지능기술이 활용된 사례를 분석함으로써, 기술적 모방을 초월하는 창조의 가능성을 탐색하고자 한다.
