This study aims to proVide foundational data for understanding the corrosion mechanisms of excaVated bronze artifacts by examining the microstructure, phase structure of corrosion layers, and analyzing corrosion products of bronze artifacts manufactured using the Forged high tin bronze technique. The results reVeal that Cu-Sn bronze artifacts tend to undergo preferential corrosion of the α-phase due to microstructural characteristics formed during the manufacturing process. The resulting cracks propagate along the β-phase martensite laths, leading to internal corrosion layer delamination and pitting damage. In particular, for Cu-Sn bronze artifacts excaVated from burial enVironments, a high-tin internal corrosion layer composed of tin oxide is formed due to de-cuprification. The thickness of this high-tin corrosion layer was found to be a critical factor contributing to differences in corrosion characteristics among bronze artifacts.
