In this study, we investigated Toona sinensis leaf (TSL) extract as a potential functional cosmetic ingredient by testing its pharmacology effect on skin cells. TSL suppressed Interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8 and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-1 expression in tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α stimulated human epidermal keratinocyte (HaCaT) and human dermal fibroblast (Hs68). And TSL inhibited 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical activity in a concentration dependent manner. Furthermore, TSL reduced melanin production in α-melanocyte stimulating hormone (α-MSH) induced B16F10 melanoma cells and inhibited mushroom tyrosinase activity. In addition, TSL inhibited the melanogenic enzymes protein levels. Collectively, TSL demonstrated anti-inflammation, anti-aging, antioxidant, and anti-melanogenesis effects on skin cells and confirmed positive effect in skin physiology that suggest its potential as a functional cosmetic ingredient.
