This study examines how the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification (FFWPU) conceptualizes the relationship between religion and politics in the course of pursuing the ideal world of Cheon Il Guk. Based on a comprehensive analysis of FFWPU doctrine and the words of its founders, the findings are as follows. First, from the perspectives of religion as a provisional instrument and of the eventual cessation of religion, FFWPU asserts that religion functions as a major providential means of God and can never be an end in itself. The ultimate purpose of religion is the realization of Cheon Il Guk centered on True Parents; once this divine purpose is fulfilled, religion will cease to exist. Second, within the vision of a “world centered on True Parents,” the term True Parents refers to Sun Myung Moon and Hak Ja Han, who guide all humankind to be reborn as children of Heavenly Parent, as well as to individuals who inherit their teachings and embody the spirit of True Parents and the Three Great Subjects Thought. Third, in the process of realizing Cheon Il Guk, FFWPU views religion and politics as analogous to the relationship between mind and body. It guides political leaders to internalize the Three Great Subjects Thought based on Heavenly Parent’s true love, and to practice genuine governance from the perspective of mutual existence, mutual prosperity, and universally shared values. In this sense, FFWPU advocates the harmonization of religion and politics, not violating the constitutional principle of separation of religion and state (Article 20, Clause 2), nor constituting a collusive relationship between religion and political power.

본 논문은 세계평화통일가정연합이 이상세계 ‘천일국’(天一國)을 지향하는 과정에서 종교와 정치의 관계를 어떻게 바라보는지를 밝히는 데 초점을 둔다. 가정연합의 교리와 창시자 문선명· 한학자 총재의 말씀을 종합하였을 때 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 가정연합은 종교방편론과 종교소멸론이라는 관점에서, 종교는 신의 섭리의 주요 방편이지 결코 그 자체로 목적이 될 수 없으며, 종교의 궁극적 목적은 참부모를 중심한 천일국 실현으로서 그 뜻이 이루어지면 종교는 소멸할 것임을 주창한다. 둘째, ‘참부모 중심한 세계’에서 참부모란 전 인류를 하늘부모 님의 자녀로 거듭나게 하는 문선명·한학자 총재 양위분을 가리키는 동시에, 양위분의 가르침을 전수받아 참부모 정신, 3대주체사상을 실천하는 인간을 의미한다. 셋째, 천일국을 실현하는 과정에서 가정연합은 종교와 정치를 마음과 몸의 관계로 보고, 정치인들이 하늘부모님의 참사 랑에 기반을 둔 3대주체사상을 체득하여 공생·공영·공의의 관점에서 참된 정치를 실천하도록 인도한다. 즉, 정교화합(政敎和合)을 추구한다. 이는 헌법 20조 2항 정교분리의 원칙을 훼손하 지 않으며, 사적인 이득을 구하는 정교유착(政敎癒着)으로 볼 수 없다.
