This study examines the poetic world of Gosan(孤山) Lee You-jang(李惟樟), focusing on the evolution of his inner consciousness over time. His poems categorized under ‘awareness of the classical Confucian concept of chulch’o(出處, entering and withdrawing from public life) and self-reflection‘ reveal his intense emotional struggles amid political turmoil, prioritizing moral cultivation and scholarly pursuits over formal aesthetics. In the second phase, represented by works in the category of ‘frustration with reality and expression of a sense of concern for the times(憂患意識),’ Gosan(孤山) Lee You-jang (李惟樟) moves beyond introspection and grappling with chulch’o (出處) to actively choosing public service(出仕). These poems vividly reveal his growing sense of responsibility and anxiety over societal turmoil, reflecting a sense of concern for the times(憂患意識) as an intellectual confronting the realities of his era. This marks a significant transformation in his inner consciousness—from personal reflection to an expanded awareness of collective suffering and social critique. Finally, in the category of ‘return to rural life(田園) and pursuit of seclusion(隱 逸)’, his later poems predominantly focus on reflections of everyday rural life and an aspiration for a fully secluded existence. This contrasts with his earlier works, which convey the psychological pain and burden experienced amid the tension between reclusion and public service—the classical Confucian concept of chulch’o (出處). This shift appears to be the result of a long-held desire, beginning in his late thirties, to fully retire to the mountains and forests(山林)—a wish he was only able to briefly fulfill in his old age. As historical records of Gosan(孤山) Lee You-jang(李惟樟) indicate, he was perceived by both his contemporaries and later generations as a scholar and a moral exemplar who served as a guiding figure for chulch’o(出處) during a turbulent era. Having retired to the mountains in his thirties and devoted his life to scholarship, focusing on self-cultivation and nurturing future scholars, it is perhaps natural that his poetic world is imbued with themes of scholarly self-reflection and a Confucian learning(道學) ethos. However, as noted in the evaluation by Lee Sang-jeong(李象靖), despite his reclusive life in the countryside and aspiration for fame, Gosan actively expressed in his poetry the inner conflicts surrounding chulch’o(出處) as well as the sense of concern for the times(憂患意 識) he faced as an intellectual confronting the realities of his era. This distinguishes his work from that of other contemporary scholars who pursued a reclusive life detached from societal struggles.

이 글에서는 시기에 따른 내면의식의 변화 과정을 중심으로 고산 이유장 의 시세계를 고찰하였다. ‘出處에 대한 인식과 자아성찰’의 범주에 속하는 작품은 형식미와 문예미를 추구하기보다는 혼란한 정국 속에서 도덕적 수양 및 학문을 추구하면서도 출처의 사이에서 갈등하고 고민하는 그의 절실한 심경을 담고 있다. 다음으로 ‘현실에서의 좌절과 憂患意識표출’의 범주에 속하는 작품에서 는 출처에 대한 고민과 자아 성찰의 문제를 넘어 出仕를 선택한 뒤 현실을 마주하며 느끼는 당대 지식인으로서의 책임감과 우환의식이 뚜렷이 드러난 다. 이는 고산의 내면의식이 더 이상 자아 성찰과 자기고민에 머무르지 않 고 사회적 고통과 문제의식으로 확장된 결과라 하겠다. 마지막으로 ‘田園으로의 회귀와 隱逸의 지향’의 범주에 속하는 작품에서 는 이전 은거와 출사 사이에서 느끼는 심적 고통과 무게가 느껴지는 작품들 과 달리 전원의 일상에서 느끼는 소회를 기록하고 완전한 隱逸의 삶을 지향 하는 작품들이 주를 이룬다. 이는 30대 후반부터 그토록 염원했던 완전한 山林으로의 은거를 노년이 되어서야 잠시나마 이루게 된 결과로 보인다. 고산에 대한 후인들의 기록에서 살펴보았듯이 고산은 당대와 후대의 인 물들에게 학자이자 혼란한 시대 상황 속에서 출처의 이정표를 제시했던 선 비의 표상으로 인식되었다. 그가 30대 이후로 산림에 은거하여 평생토록 학 문에 침잠하면서 학문을 통한 자기 수양과 후진 양성에 힘썼기에 그의 시세 계에 묻어나는 학자로서의 자아 성찰과 道學的분위기는 어쩌면 당연한 결 과일지도 모른다. 그러나 李象靖의 평가에서 볼 수 있듯이 고산은 전원에 은거하며 고명한 데에 마음을 두었어도 당대 지성인으로서 겪는 출처에 대 한 내적 갈등과 당면한 현실에 대한 우환의식을 그의 시에 적극적으로 표출 하였는데, 이 점이 혼란했던 당대에 전원에서 은거하며 학자로서의 삶을 추 구했던 다른 작가의 작품들과 변별되는 지점이다.
