This paper provides a translation and commentary on the front side of the Pennsylvania Tablet (CBS 7771), which contains a portion of the Akkadian Epic of Gilgamesh from the Old Babylonian period. The tablet features a narrative passage centered on the formation of the relationship between Gilgamesh and Enkidu, offering a detailed depiction of how the wild man Enkidu becomes integrated into human society. The text is broadly divided into three parts. Column I records two dreams dreamt by Gilgamesh and their interpretations by his mother, Ninsun; the symbols in the dreams foreshadow the arrival of Enkidu and hint at the friendship between the two. Column II describes Enkidu’s first steps into the human world, beginning with his sexual encounter with the prostitute Shamhat, which marks his departure from a life among animals. Column III portrays the full onset of civilization through Enkidu’s consumption of bread and beer, grooming and clothing, and the assumption of a social role.

본 논문은 고바빌로니아 시대 아카드어 길가메시 서사시의 일부를 담 고 있는 펜실베니아 토판(CBS 7771)의 전면에 기록된 본문에 대한 번역 과 주해를 제공한다. 해당 토판은 길가메시와 엔키두의 관계 형성을 중심 으로 구성된 서사 단락을 담고 있으며, 야성의 인물 엔키두가 인간 사회 로 편입되는 과정을 세밀하게 묘사한다. 본문은 크게 세 부분으로 구성된 다. 제1열에서는 길가메시가 꾼 두 개의 꿈과 이에 대한 어머니 닌순의 해몽이 기록되어 있다. 꿈의 상징들은 엔키두의 등장을 암시하며, 길가메 시와의 우정을 예고한다. 제2열은 창기 삼핫과의 성관계를 통해 엔키두가 동물과의 삶을 벗어나 인간 세계에 첫발을 내딛는 과정을 묘사하고, 제3 열에서는 빵과 맥주 섭취, 외모 정돈, 사회적 역할 습득 등을 통해 문명화 가 본격적으로 진행된다.
