This study examines the linguistic characteristics of the Hangeul letters written by Ryu Un and Yi Ji-eok, both included in the Pungsan Ryu Clan Letters Collection. Apart from the regional backgrounds of the writers, both letters share identical characteristics: the time of writing (mid-18th century), the writers’ social status, age, and gender (male yangban in their 50s to 60s), and the recipient (the Yeonan Yi clan). The purpose of this study is to investigate the linguistic features of mid-18th-century Korean based on the similarities between the two letters and to explore dialectal characteristics revealed through their differences. The analysis identified several phonological distinctions between the Gyeongsang and Seoul dialects, such as /t/ palatalization, deletion of word-initial /n/ before /i/ and /j/, and vowel rounding (labialization). Grammatically, both texts showed patterns of change in interrogative endings and tense systems. Yi Ji-eok’s text contained an early example of the subject marker ‘ga’. Lexically, Ryu Un’s letter contains several Andong dialect words (alsiropda, yeota, aida, ssogida, and ijeokji) whereas Yi Ji-eok’s letter includes the Seoul dialect word (dun). These two Hangeul letters are considered important materials for understanding varying degrees of linguistic change by region in the 18th century, regional dialect differences, and individual speech variations.

본고는 <풍산 류씨 류사춘가 언간> 중 류운 언간과 이지억 언간을 대상으로 하여 언어적 특징을 살피는 데 목적이 있다. 두 언간은 발신자의 재지적 기반을 제외하면 작성 시기(18세기 중엽), 발신자의 신분과 연령 및 성별(5~60대 양반층 남성), 수신자(연안 이씨)가 동일하다. 즉 본고에서는 두 언간에 담긴 언어의 공통점을 통해 18세기 중엽의 한국어를 들여다보고, 차이점을 통해 방언적 특징을 살피고자 하였다. 그 결과 /ㄷ/ 구개음화와 /i/, /j/ 앞 어두 /ㄴ/ 탈락, 원순모음화 등 음운론적인 면에서 경상 방언과 서울 방언의 차이를 확인할 수 있었다. 문법적인 면에서는 두 언간에서 모두 의문형 종결 어미 및 시제 체계의 변화 양상을 관찰할 수 있었고, 이지억 언간에서 주격 조사 ‘가’의 선구적인 예가 나타났다. 어휘적인 면에서는 류운 언간에서 안동 방언 어휘 ‘알시롭다, 옇다, 아이다, ᄡᅩᆨ이다, 이적지’를, 이지억 언간에서 서울 방언 어휘 ‘둔’을 확인하였다. 두 언간은 18세기 지역에 따른 언어 변화의 확장 정도 차이, 지역어의 차이, 개인어의 차이 등에 대한 연구에서 중요한 자료가 될 것이라 생각된다.
