Unheungsa Temple on Cheonseong Mountain in Ulsan is well known as a site where the carving and publication of Buddhist texts (beopseos) flourished from the late 17th to the early 18th century. While various studies have been conducted on the woodblocks carved at Unheungsa Temple, research focusing specifically on individual sutra woodblocks has been notably lacking. Therefore, this paper examines the current state, characteristics, and historical background of the Bulseol Daebo Bumo Eunjung-gyeong , which was the first text carved at Unheungsa in 1668. Among the woodblocks of the Bumo Eunjung-gyeong from Unheungsa Temple, currently housed at the Tongdosa Seongbo Museum, four plates previously classified as duplicates can be identified as part of the 1648 edition carved at Tongdosa Temple. Furthermore, a comparison of the two editions suggests that the Unheungsa version was carved based on the Tongdosa edition as its source text. The active production of Buddhist scriptures at Unheungsa Temple from the late 17th to the early 18th century was initiated by two monks, Yeonhui and Hakhun. By jointly publishing the BumoEunjung-gyeong and the Myobeop Hwajeong-gyeon -two of the most popular and widely favored texts at the time- they succeeded in rallying public participation in the Buddhist project and further expanded Unheungsa's influence within the local community. Considering the division of responsibilities in the publication of Buddhist scriptures at Unheungsa Temple, it appears that both monastic and lay participants were involved: financial support was primarily led by the ruling class, while administrative tasks related to woodblock carving made active use of Unheungsa’s internal organizational structure. Given that this publication system is evident in the colophons and prefaces of various Buddhist texts published at Unheungsa around the 17th century, it can be inferred that the organizational structure used for the publication of the Bumo Eunjung-gyeong essentially represented the broader system employed by Unheungsa for its Buddhist scripture publications.

울산 천성산 운흥사는 17세기 후반부터 18세기 전반까지 불서의 판각과 간행이 활발하게 이루어졌던 사찰로 잘 알려져 있다. 울산 운흥사에서 판각된 목판에대해서는 그동안 여러 시각에서 연구가 되었지만, 개별 경판에 초점을 맞추는 연구는 전무한 실정이다. 이에 본고에서는 1668년 운흥사에서 가장 먼저 판각된 『불설대보부모은중경』(이하 『부모은중경』(언해)의 현황과 특징, 판각 배경에 대해 살펴보았다. 통도사성보박물관에 소장된 운흥사판『부모은중경』(언해)는 그동안 16판 32장으로 파악되었으며, 그 중 21·22장, 25·26장 두 판은 중복판으로 분류되었다. 그러나 목판의 형태, 변란 및 어미 등 판식의 구성 등을 통해 볼 때, 기존 중복판으로 분류되었던 2판 4장은 1648년 통도사에서 판각된 『부모은중경』(언해)이며, 사찰에서 보관 중 운흥사판에 이입된 것으로 추정된다. 또한, 21·22장, 25·26장의 어미 안에 ‘仅’, ‘甘’이란 글자는 1648년 통도사판 『부모은중경』(언해) 의 판각에 참여했던 각수 의감(義監)의 이름을 새긴 것으로 볼 수 있다. 한편, 운흥사본과 통도사본을 비교해본 결과 판식의 구성, 원문의 내용, 변상도의 표현 등이 매우 유사함을 확인할 수 있다. 이를 통해 운흥사본은 통도사본을 저본으로 판각된 것으로 볼 수 있다. 17세기 후반부터 18세기 전반까지 활발히 전개된 운흥사의 불서 개판은 연희와 학훈 두 승려에 의해 시작되었으며, 『부모은중경』(언해)이 가장 먼저 판각되었다. 부모의 명복을 기원하고, 자신의 공덕을 쌓고자 시작되었으며, 당시 가장 대중적이고 선호되던 『부모은중경』(언해)와 『묘법화경』을 함께 간행함으로써 불사에 참여할 대중을 모으고, 나아가 지역사회에서 운흥사의 저변을 확대시켰다. 연희와 학훈은 덕유산에서 판목을 구하고, 개령 고방사에 공방을 설치해 판각을 시작하였다. 고방사가 위치한 개령은 고려시대부터 여러 불서가 간행되었으며, 지역의 불전 간행 조직 체계가 지속적으로 운영 및 계승되던 지역이다. 따라서 연희와 학훈은 개령면의 전적 간행 조직 체계를 활용하기 위해 고방사에 공방을 설치해 실무를 진행한 것으로 볼 수 있다. 『부모은중경』(언해)에 필요한 등재본의 필사는 발문을 쓴 사운(思運)이 담당하였다. 그리고 스스로 서원을 내어 『부모은중경』(언해)의 판각 실무를 담당한 각수는 계신(戒信)이다. 『부모은중경』(언해)와 『묘법연화경』을 판각하는 동안 필요한 각종 공양비용은 학훈이 주도했다. 이 외에도 판각에는 운흥사의 승려, 지역민들이 함께 참여하였다. 운흥사의 불전 간행과 관련해 각종 업무의 분담 체계를 고려해 볼 때 승속이 참여하면서 재정적 부분은 각계각층의 사람들이 마련하였으며, 판각과 관련된 행정조직은 운흥사의 조직체계를 적극 활용했다. 이러한 불전 간행 조직 체계는 17세기 전후에 운흥사에서 간행된 각종 불전의지ㆍ발문에서 확인된다는 사실을 미루어 볼 때 『부모은중경』의 간행 조직 체계가 곧 운흥사의 불전 간행 조직 체계였음을 말해 준다.
