This study examines whether childhood adversity can foster aspirations and determination toward entrepreneurship. Despite many successful entrepreneurs having overcome hardships, empirical research in Korea on this relationship is limited. The study analyzes the effects of childhood adversity on entrepreneurial intention and the mediating role of psychological perceptions. Childhood adversity— physical abuse, emotional abuse, and neglect—was the independent variable; perceived desirability and feasibility were mediators; and entrepreneurial intention was the dependent variable. An online survey was conducted with 200 Korean adult workers, and multiple regression and bootstrapping analyses tested variable relationships. Emotional abuse and neglect had significant positive effects on entrepreneurial intention. For neglect, indirect effects were also found through perceived desirability and feasibility. Physical abuse showed no significant effect. These results suggest that negative childhood experiences can, through specific psychological perceptions, translate into entrepreneurial behavior rather than act solely as barriers. Emotional deprivation, in particular, may stimulate entrepreneurial intention, implying that entrepreneurship support policies should consider individuals’ developmental backgrounds. By framing childhood adversity as a key psychosocial factor in entrepreneurial motivation, this study shows that entrepreneurship opportunities can extend to those raised in challenging environments.

본 연구는 유년기의 역경이 개인의 창업에 대한 열망과 의지를 키우는 계기가 될 수 있다는 관점에서 출발하였다. 창업 성공 사례 중 역경을 이겨낸 이들이 많음에도 불구하고, 유년기 역경 과 창업의도 간의 관계를 실증 분석한 국내 연구는 부족한 실정이다. 이에 본 연구는 역경이 창 업의도에 미치는 영향과 이 과정에서 개인의 심리적 인식의 역할을 분석하여, 유년기 경험이 창 업 동기에 어떻게 연결될 수 있는지에 대한 이해를 높이고자 한다. 독립변수로 유년기 역경(신체적 학대, 정서적 학대, 방임)을, 매개변수로 지각된 소망성과 지각 된 실현가능성을, 종속변수로 창업의도를 설정하였다. 국내 성인 근로자 200명을 대상으로 온라 인 설문조사를 실시하고, 다중회귀분석과 부트스트래핑 분석을 통해 변수 간 관계를 검증하였다. 분석 결과, 정서적 학대와 방임은 창업의도에 유의한 정(+)의 영향을 미쳤으며, 방임의 경우 지각 된 소망성과 지각된 실현가능성을 통한 간접효과도 나타났다. 반면, 신체적 학대는 창업의도에 유의한 영향을 미치지 않았다. 이러한 결과는 유년기 부정적 경험이 창업의 장애가 아니라, 특정 심리적 인식을 통해 창업이라 는 도전적 행동으로 전환될 수 있는 가능성을 실증적으로 보여준 것이다. 특히 정서적 결핍 경험 이 창업의도를 자극할 수 있다는 점에서, 창업 지원 정책에서 개인의 성장 배경을 고려한 맞춤형 접근이 필요함을 시사한다. 본 연구는 유년기 역경을 창업 동기 형성의 중요한 심리·사회적 요인 으로 해석함으로써, 어려운 환경에서 성장한 개인에게도 창업 기회가 열릴 수 있음을 제시한다.
