This study examined Suzhoumazi, traditional number of Suzhou written in Jiangnanzhizaojuji and modern military supplies in China. Suzhoumazi was born in ancient Chinese society and was continuously used through Song and Ming times to Qing society. In traditional Chinese society, Suzhoumazi are known to have been used to expedite calculations such as accounting, centering on merchants. Suzhoumazi, which was used by merchants in the traditional period, was used in the military industry, one of the major industries of the nation, in modern times. This fact tells us that Suzhoumazi was used as a 'special character' used by the special class in the traditional period, but it was used as a 'universal character' in modern Chinese society. So, in the modern era, Suzhoumazi was used in the literature reported to the central government by official bureau, used in the military uniforms of soldiers belonging to the modern army, and recorded in modern military weapons. In addition to modern military supplies, Suzhoumazi were also used in the railway industry, which is closely related to the modern military industry.

본고에서는 중국 근대 시기에 작성된 『江南製造局記』와 근대 군수 물자에 나오는 蘇州碼子에 관해 살펴보았다. 소주마자는 중국 고대 사회에 생겨나서 宋代와 明代를 거쳐 淸代 사회에 이르기까지 지속적으로 사용되었다. 중국 전통 사회에서 소주마자는 상인 계층을 중심으로 회계와 같은 계산을 신속히 처리하기 위해서 사용한 것으로 알 려져 있다. 전통 시기에 상인 계층에 의해서 사용되었던 소주마자는 근대에 이르러 국가의 주요 산업 가운데 하나인 군수 산업에 사용되게 되었다. 이러한 사실은 소주마자가 전통 시기에는 특수 계층에 의해 사용된 ‘특수 문자’였지 만, 근대에 이르러서는 중국 사회의 ‘보편 문자’로 사용되었음을 말해준다. 그래서 소주 마자는 근대에 이르러 관방 기관에서 중앙 정부에 보고하는 문헌에서도 사용되었고, 근대 군대에 소속된 병사의 군복에도 쓰였으며, 근대식 군사 무기에도 기록되었다. 그리고 근대 군수 물자 이외에도, 근대 군수 산업과 밀접한 관련이 있는 철도 산업에서도 소주마자는 사용되었다.
