This study empirically investigated the impact of a writing pedagogy utilizing ChatGPT on the Self-Directed Learning (SDL) abilities of middle school students. Eighth-grade students in Seoul were divided into an experimental group (ChatGPT-assisted writing) and a control group (traditional instruction), and pre- and post-tests measuring SDL were administered. Writing outputs and free-response reflections were also analyzed for in-depth understanding. The results indicated that ChatGPT-assisted writing activities significantly positively influenced core components of SDL, including goal setting, planning, self-monitoring and revision, and reflective thinking. These findings suggest that AI technology can be an effective educational medium for fostering students' cognitive and metacognitive strategy development and self-efficacy. This study contributes by exploring the pedagogical implications of AI-based tools and providing foundational data for integrating AI to enhance SDL in secondary education.

본 연구는 ChatGPT 활용 글쓰기 수업이 중학생의 자기주도학습 능력에 미치는 영향을 규명하고자 수행되었 다. 서울 소재 중학교 2학년 학생들을 실험집단(ChatGPT 활용)과 통제집단(전통적 수업)으로 나누어 처치 후, 사전· 사후 자기주도학습 검사를 통해 변화를 비교 분석하였다. 또한, 수집된 글쓰기 결과물 및 소감문을 통해 심층 분석을 진행했다. 연구 결과, ChatGPT 활용 글쓰기 활동은 학습 목표 설정, 계획 수립, 자기 점검 및 수정, 성찰적 사고 등 자기주도학습의 핵심 구성 요소 증진에 유의미한 긍정적 영향을 미쳤다. 이는 AI 기술이 학습자의 인지적·초인지적 전략 개발과 자기효능감 함양에 기여하는 효과적인 교육 매개체가 될 수 있음을 시사한다. 본 연구는 AI 기반 교육 도구의 교육적 함의를 탐색하고, 중등 교육 현장에서 자기주도학습 역량 강화를 위한 AI 통합 방안의 기초 자료를 제공하는 데 의의가 있다.
