As global environmental issues become increasingly severe, sustainable development has become an important concern across various industries. As one of the most polluting industries worldwide, the fashion industry imposes a substantial environmental burden. In response, upcycling has emerged as a promising alternative. Upcycling is an eco-conscious design approach that grants new value to discarded materials, contributing to both resource conservation and environmental protection. This study sets upcycling and geometric formation as its theoretical foundation and investigates upcycled fashion design using waste paper as the primary material. As one of the most common forms of waste, paper recycling carries important implications for environmental protection. However, its reuse is typically confined to conventional recycling and remanufacturing processes, with limited exploration into its application as a creative medium in fashion design. In light of this, the study explores new design possibilities by combining waste paper with geometric formation. The study consists of three main parts. First, the concept and characteristics of upcycling were examined, and paper-utilized upcycling cases were analyzed. Second, the categories and visual characteristics of geometric formation were reviewed, and through existing fashion design cases applying geometric formation, their expressive techniques and features were analyzed. Third, upcycling fashion designs based on geometric formation were created using waste paper as the primary material. In conclusion, integrating geometric formation into waste paper upcycling not only promotes innovation in fashion design but also offers applicable and practical strategies for sustainable fashion. Moreover, this approach contributes to environmental protection and waste reduction, offering the potential to create a better environment for future generations.

전 세계적인 환경 문제가 날로 심각해짐에 따라 지속 가능한 발전은 각 산업 분야에서 주목받는 중요한 과제가 되었다. 패션 산업은 전 세계에서 가장 심각한 오염 산업 중 하나로서 막대한 환경 부담을 초래하고 있으며, 이에 대한 해결책으로 업사이클링이 하나의 대안으로 주목받고 있다. 업사이클링은 폐기된 자원에 새로운 가치를 부여하는 친환경적 디자인 방식으로, 자원 절약과 환경 보호에 기여할 수 있다. 본 연구는 업사이클링과 기하학적 조형을 이론적 배경으로 설정하고, 폐기된 종이를 주요 소재로 활용한 업사이클링 패션 디자인을 연구하였다. 종이는 일반적인 폐기물 중 하나로서 그 회수 및 재활용은 환경 보호 분야에서 중요한 의미를 지닌다. 그러나 현재 폐종이의 재활용은 주로 단순한 회수 및 재제조 과정에 집중되어 있으며, 패션 디자인에서의 창의적인 활용에 대한 연구는 부족한 실정이다. 이에 본 연구는 종이를 매개로 기하학적 조형성을 접목하여 새로운 디자인 가능성을 모색하였다. 연구 내용은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 업사이클링에 대한 개념 및 특성을 고찰하고, 종이 소재를 활용한 업사이클링 사례를 분석하였다. 둘째, 기하학적 조형의 유형과 시각적 특징를 검토하고, 기하학적 조형이 적용된 기존 패션 디자인 사례를 통해 그 표현 기법과 특성을 분석 하였다. 셋째, 폐기된 종이를 소재로 한 기하학적 조형 기반의 업사이클링 패션 디자인을 제작하였다. 결론적 으로 기하학적 조형과 폐종이 업사이클링의 결합은 패션 디자인의 혁신적 발전을 촉진할 뿐만 아니라 지속 가능한 패션 디자인을 위해 실천 가능한 방안을 제시함으로써 자연환경 보호와 쓰레기 배출 감소에 기여하 고, 나아가 미래 세대에게 더 나은 환경을 제공할 수 있음을 보여주었다.
