The Obscene Aesthetics of the Shinchoonshi Coterie in the 1960s as Martial Law’s Yumhwa(Erotic/Hidden Figuration)

- This study aims to demonstrate that the obscenity found in the 1960s poetic coterie magazine Shinchoonshi represents an aesthetic and literary form of disobedience against political oppression manifested through martial law and censorship. The works featured in Shinchoonshi frequently included elements such as profanity, rape, mutilated bodies, prostitutes and red-light districts, substance abuse, and even necrophilia. Such obscenity can be understood as an avant-garde form capable of expressing subversion against the regime, deliberately distancing itself from mainstream literary trends of the time that emphasized aesthetic refinement. The resistance of those labeled as illegal, barbaric, or obscene by the symbolic order of law overly idealizes the greater cause(liberal democracy), provoking a strong possessive desire and producing eroticized signifiers. Moreover, the speakers in Shinchoonshi aimed to reveal primitive pleasures and barbarity beyond the control of the state and law, using themes such as women, parricide, prostitution, drugs, alcohol, masturbation, fetishism, and sadism. Notably, the voluntary discontinuation of Shinchoonshi occurred in 1969, a period marked by intensified censorship of obscenity due to the upcoming three-term constitutional amendment for President Park Chung-hee. Literature of the time, which sought to resist censorship by avoiding obscenity, nonetheless revealed contradictions and hypocrisy in endorsing and siding with those in power. Consequently, the voluntary closure of Shinchoonshi occurred precisely at the point where the absolute authority of the law would no longer permit literature’s obscenity?an ‘outside of the outside.’ Ironically, the magazine’s closure exposed the irrationality of law, described here as an ‘excessive sovereignty’, signifying both submission to unjust laws and a powerful act of disobedience by revealing cracks and insecurities within Park Chung-hee’s regime, which ‘could only suppress everything.’

- 본 연구는 1960년대 시 동인지 『신춘시』에 나타난 ‘외설성’이 계엄과 검열의 정치적 억압에 맞선 미학적·언어적 불복종의 형식임을 밝히고자 한다. 『신춘시』에 수록된 작품들에는 욕설, 강간, 훼손된 신체, 매춘부와 사창가, 음주 및 약물, 심지어 네크로필리아적 요소가 반복적으로 나타난다. 이러한 외설성은 체제를 향한 불온함을 표출할 수 있는 전위적인 형식이자 예술성을 추구하던 당대 문단의 흐름과도 거리를 두는 방식이었다. 법이라는 상징질서에 의해 불법, 야만, 외설 등으로 호명된 이들의 저항은 혁명의 대의(자유민주주의)를 과도하게 이상화하는 동시에 강력한 소유욕을 유발하며 성애화된 기표를 생산한다. 또한 『신춘시』의 화자들은 여성 및 근친살해, 사창가, 약물, 음주, 수음, 페티시즘, 사디즘을 통해 국가와 법이 통제할 수 없는 원초적 쾌락과 야만성을 드러내고자 했다. 그런데 『신춘시』가 자진 폐간한 1969년은 삼선개헌을 앞두고 외설 검열이 더욱 극심해진 시기이다. 검열에 저항하고자 외설을 배제해왔던 당대의 문학은 한편으로 권력을 승인, 이에 편승하는 모순과 위선을 보였다. 『신춘시』의 자진폐간은 법의 절대적 권한이 문학의 외설성이라는 ‘외부의 외부’조차 허용하지 않는 바로 그 지점에서 이루어졌다고 볼 수 있다. 하지만 『신춘시』의 폐간은 아이러니하게도 ‘과잉된 주권’의 언어로서 법의 불합리성을 노출시켰다. 이는 ‘모든 것을 억압할 수밖에 없었던’ 박정희 정권의 균열과 불안을 증명한 사건이라는 점에서 부당한 법에 대한 굴복이자 동시에 강력한 불복종이라고 할 수 있다.

- 한국문예창작학회(The Society of Korean Literary Creative Writing)는 한국 문학의 새 지평을 열기 위해 문예창작 이론과 문예교육 이론을 연구 계발하여 문 예창작의 새로운 방향을 제시하고자 조직한 학술단체입니다. 전국 대학과 대학원 문예창작 관련학과의 전·현직 전임교수·겸임(초빙)교수· 강 사·대학원 재학 이상자 및 문예창작인들이 회원으로 활동하고 있습니다. 학회의 목적에 적극적으로 동의하는 문학 관련 단체나 문학창작 동호인도 준회원으로 참 여하고 있습니다. 연 2회 학회지를 발간해 학문적 기반을 닦고 있으며, 정기적으로 학술 세미나 와 해외 문학 심포지엄 등 학술 발표회를 개최하여 학문적 교류와 토론의 장을 넓히고 있습니다. 한편으로, 문예창작 캠프·문학기행 등의 창작교육 활동과 창작 학습 행사를 수 시로 진행하면서, 창작·창작이론·창작교육에 관한 활동의 범위를 넓히고 있습니다. 별도로, 문예창작 교육을 받은 문예창작학도들의 진로 개발을 위해 '문예교육지도 교사 자격 시험'도 운영하고 있습니다. The Society of Korean Literary Creative Writing is a pure academic association for the literary cretive writing, and was organized on November 11, 2001 for the purpose of presenting the new direction of literary creative writing by studying all the methods to activate and develop the theories of literary creative writing and its education. Our society is composed of professors or ex-professors, some invited professor, lecturers, graduate students of the dept. of literary creative writing as regular members, and the persons interested in our program as associative members. Our society holds an annual academic meeting-- literary symposium, literary creative writing seminar-- and publishes the journal of our society and our members' anthology of literary works. Added to these, our society has already started a new project to open the way for our literary juniors by providing them with a certificate as a leader and holding a forum for literary creative writing.
