From the perspective that Eastern art is about 'expressing the mind', concepts such as heart (心), nature (性), emotion (情), intention (意), and will (志) are closely related to the practical realm of art. Among them, 'Yi' (意) holds significant importance as it is the core of the aesthetic concept, representing both the freedom of the subjective spirit and the symbol of self-awareness in Eastern art. This paper examines the aesthetic inclination of 'Yi' from the perspectives of Confucian and Daoist aesthetics. Chapter II investigates the Confucian 'Yi', which is expressed through its practical application in real life. Specifically, it aims to clarify the meaning of 'Yi' in the philosophies of Mencius and Zhu Xi. Section 1 examines the artistic expression of sentiment inherent in the thought of gauging another's intention with one's own (以意逆志) under the background of Mencius's explanation of personal ideals and moral benevolent righteousness. The idea of gauging another's intention with one's own involves immersing the appreciator's spirit into the work, thereby integrating with the artist's will (志) and achieving personal sublimation. Section 2 interprets the concept of 'Yi' and the philosophy of 'Sincerity of Intention' in Zhu Xi's philosophy from a moral motivational perspective, determining that 'Yi' in 'Sincerity of Intention' acts as a decisive link in the moral act between learning knowledge (致 知) and having a correct mind (正心). In this regard, it reveals that 'Yi' strongly exhibits an aesthetic inclination imbued with Confucian ethical cultivation. Chapter III elucidates the Daoist aesthetic inclination of 'Yi'. Daoism rejects the artificial Confucian thought and emphasizes finding an aesthetic subjective consciousness tailored to transcendental and subjective characteristics. Section 1 reveals Laozi's 'Yi' through the principle of 'Nature' governing all things in the universe, in the spirit of artistic aesthetics, highlighting its suggestions of important aesthetic principles for future calligraphy and artistic creation. Section 2 focuses on 'Yi' in Zhuangzi's thought of forgetting words after achieving an intention, which breaks the restrictive concept of 'words' and promotes the awakening of aesthetic subjective consciousness tailored to transcendental and subjective characteristics. Through this study, I clarified that despite using the same character 'Yi', Confucianism and Daoism exhibit different thoughts.

동양 예술은 ‘마음을 표현하는’ 예술이란 관점에서 볼 때 心, 性, 情, 意, 志등 은 실질적인 예술 범주와 연관이 있다. 그중에서 ‘意’는 동양 예술의 주체 정신의 자유 이면서 자각의 표지이고, 동양 예술 심미 관념의 核心이란 점에서 중요한 의미가 있다. 본 논문은 ‘意’가 갖는 미학적 성향을 儒家와 道家사상적 측면에서 고찰한 것이다. Ⅱ 장에서는 실제 삶에서 갖는 실천성으로 표현된 유가적 ‘意’를 살펴보았다. 구체적으로 ‘意’가 孟子와 朱子철학에서 각각 어떤 의미가 있는지를 밝히고자 하였다. 1절에서는 孟子의 인격적 이상과 ‘仁義’ 도덕적 설명이 이뤄진 배경 아래에서 ‘以意逆志’가 갖는 예 술론적 정감 표출을 살펴보았다. ‘以意逆志’는 독자의 정신을 작품에 몰입시켜 작품에 대한 ‘작자의 뜻〔志〕’과 융합하여 인격적 승화에 도달하는 것이다. 2절에서는 도덕적 동기론적 관점에서 朱子철학의 ‘意’ 개념과 ‘誠意’ 사상을 해석하여, ‘誠意’의 ‘意’는 학 습의 앎〔致知〕과 바른 마음〔正心〕사이의 도덕적 행위로 구체화 되는데 결정적 연 결고리로 작용함을 규명하였다. 이런 점에서 ‘意’는 유가 수양론적으로 인륜성이 담긴 미학적 성향이 강하게 나타났음을 밝혔다. Ⅲ장에서는 ‘意’의 도가 미학적 性向을 규명 하였다. 道家는 인위적 儒家사상을 부정하고, 초월적 · 주관적 특성에 맞춘 미적 주체 의식을 찾을 것을 강조하였다. 1절에서는 老子는 우주 만물의 ‘自然’ 원리를 통한 ‘意’를 예술 미학적 정신에서 밝혔으며, 이런 점은 후대 서예 및 예술 창작에 중요한 미학적 원칙을 제시한 것을 밝혔다. 2절에서는 莊子의 ‘得意忘言’에서 ‘意’는 ‘言’의 부자유스러 운 개념을 깨고, 초월 및 주관적 특성에 맞춘 미적 주체 의식 각성을 촉진시켰다는 점 에 초점을 맞추어 규명하였다. 이상과 같은 연구를 통해 동일한 ‘意’ 자를 사용해도 유 가와 도가는 각각 다른 사유를 보였음을 규명하였다.
