Visual narrative has established itself as a primary mode of information transmission in contemporary society due to its characteristics of intuitiveness, symbolism, spatiality, and differentiation. Among various forms of picture books, silent books possess not only a high degree of artistic value but also the ability to transcend language and cultural barriers, thereby meeting the developmental needs of societies in multicultural contexts. Although research on visual narrative has been conducted to some extent within academia, it has primarily focused on fields such as sculpture, photography, theater, and film, while systematic discussion related to silent books remains relatively scarce. This study examines four works from different countries that have won the Grand Prize at the Silent Book Contest. As a research method, it first identifies the constituent elements of visual narrative through an extensive literature review. Then, by applying visual narrative grammar, it deconstructs and analyzes the image-sequence narratives of silent books. Furthermore, through case analysis, it investigates in depth the characteristics of visual narrative as manifested in silent books. The results of the study reveal that, in terms of monoscenic narratives, most silent books tend to employ the mode of narrative through a single scene, while synoptic narratives and cyclic narratives are rarely utilized. From the perspective of image-sequence narratives, picture book stories are generally composed of multiple sequences, which are closely interconnected to form a logical structure and rhythm within the narrative. In terms of peritext, it was found that many silent book covers serve to imply the theme of the story, while frontispieces contribute to setting the overall mood. However, in certain works, the narrative begins directly from the frontispiece, suggesting that the structure of silent books can be relatively flexible. Finally, analysis of the physical information of the selected works confirmed that the size and format of the books share considerable similarities. This study seeks to establish a theoretical foundation for future research by systematizing theories of visual narrative, while also presenting a comprehensive account of the narrative characteristics of silent books. In doing so, it aims to provide creators with practical insights, to consolidate the academic basis of silent book studies, and to contribute to broadening the horizons of creative practice.

시각적 내러티브(Visual Narrative)는 직관성, 상징 성, 공간성, 차이성 등의 특성으로 인해 현대 사회 정 보 전달의 주요 방식으로 자리 잡고 있다. 이에 다양한 그림책 형식 중에서도 무언 그림책은 높은 예술적 가치 를 지닐 뿐만 아니라 언어와 문화를 초월한 전달력을 갖추고 있어 다문화적 배경에서의 사회 발전 요구에 부 합한다. 현재 학계에서는 시각적 내러티브에 대한 연구 가 일정 부분 진행되고 있으나 주로 조각, 사진, 연극· 영상 등의 분야에 집중되어 있으며, 무언 그림책과 관 련한 체계적 논의는 상대적으로 부족한 실정이다. 본 연구는 ‘국제 무언 그림책 공모전(Silent Book Contest)’에서 대상을 수상한 바 있는 다양한 국가의 네 작품을 연구 대상으로 삼았다. 연구 방법으로는 다 각적인 문헌조사를 통해 이미지 내러티브의 구성 요소 를 도출하고, 시각적 내러티브 문법을 활용하여 무언 그림책의 이미지 시퀀스 내러티브를 해체·분석하였다. 아울러 사례분석을 통해 무언 그림책에 나타나는 이미 지 내러티브의 특성을 심층적으로 고찰하였다. 연구의 결과, 단일 이미지 내러티브의 측면에서 보 았을 때 대부분의 무언 그림책은 단일 장면 내러티브 방식을 활용하여 이야기를 전개하는 양상을 보였으며, 개요식 내러티브나 순환 내러티브 방식은 거의 사용되 지 않는 것으로 확인되었다. 한편, 이미지 시퀀스 내러 티브의 측면에서는 그림책의 이야기가 대개 여러 개의 시퀀스로 구성되어 있었으며, 해당 시퀀스들이 서로 긴 밀하게 연결되어 이야기의 논리 구조와 리듬을 형성하 고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 페리텍스트 측면에서 보 면 상당수의 무언 그림책 표지가 이야기의 주제를 암시 하는 역할을 하며, 속표지는 이야기의 분위기를 조성하 는 데 기여하고 있었다. 그러나 일부 작품은 속표지에 서부터 이야기를 시작하기도 하였는데, 이는 무언 그림 책의 구성이 비교적 유연하게 운영될 수 있음을 보여준 다. 마지막으로, 사례 작품들의 물리적 정보 분석을 통 해 그림책의 사이즈와 형식이 서로 상당 부분 유사함을 확인할 수 있었다. 본 연구는 이미지 내러티브 이론을 정리하여 후속 연구를 위한 이론적 토대를 마련하고, 무언 그림책의 이미지 내러티브 특성을 종합적으로 제시함으로써 창작 자들에게 실천적 아이디어를 제공하고자 하였다. 나아 가 무언 그림책 연구의 학문적 기반을 확립하고 창작 실천의 지평을 확장하는 데 기여하고자 한다.
