The purpose of this paper is to analyze the conditions for German civic education (Politische Bildung) to transform into political didactics(Politikdidaktik) as an academic discipline. Political didactics goes beyond simply imparting political knowledge. It focuses on fostering critical thinking, participatory skills, and democratic competencies, enabling learners to recognize political issues, make political judgments, and act independently. Therefore, political didactics can be defined as an academic discipline that encompasses teaching and learning processes for civic education both within and outside of school. In other words, as an academic discipline, political didactics is not a subdiscipline of pedagogy or political science, but rather an independent discipline encompassing a specific body of knowledge. This study aims to analyze and describe the conditions for the establishment of civic education in Germany, which began in the 16th century, as it was institutionalized as political didactics in the 1960s and transformed into an independent discipline. Therefore, this paper first provides an overview of political didactics, analyzes its reference disciplines and Disciplinarity, and describes the current status of civic education as discipline, including its research subjects, theories, and the establishment of independent departments at universities. Finally, the future direction of current political didactics will be presented in the conclusion.

정치교수학(Politikdidaktik)은 정치 지식을 단순히 전달하는 것을 넘어서 학습자가 스스로 정치적인 사안을 인식하고 정치적 판단을 내리고 행동할 수 있도록 비판적인 사고, 참여 능력 그리고 민주적 역량을 제고 하는 데 초점을 두고 있다. 따라서 정치교수학은 학교 내외에서 정치교육을 위한 교육 및 학습 과정을 대상으로 하는 학문 단위(academic discipline)라고 정의할 수 있다. 즉, 하나의 학문 단위로서 정치교수학은 교육학 또는 정치학의 하위학문이 아니라 특정 분야의 지식체계를 의미하는 독립적인 분과학문인 것이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 16세기부터 진행되어 온 독일의 정치교육이 지난 1960년대에 정치교수학(Politikdidaktik)으로 제도화되고, 하나의 독립된 분과학문으로 전환되면서 그 성립요건에 대한 분석·기술을 목적으로 한다. 따라서 우선 정치교수학을 개관하고 정치교수학의 준거학문과 학문성을 진단하고, 분과학문으로서 정치교수학의 연구대상, 이론 및 대학의 독립학과 설치 등에 대한 현황이 기술된다. 마지막으로 현행 정치교수학의 미래적 방향이 결론에서 제시될 것이다.
