Outdoor steel sculptures are subjected to corrosion owing to their continuous exposure to environmental conditions, causing structural and visual deterioration. Herein, partial restoration methods were proposed to address the damage of paint layers on these sculptures and quantitatively evaluate the practicality and limitations of each method. Restoration experiments were conducted using rust-inhibiting coatings and water-based corrosion inhibitors on red paint–coated steel specimens. Field-matching acrylic paint, original paint, and adhesive preservation treatments were applied to the flaked paint layers. Artificial aging tests indicated that the combination of the original paint and coating agents maintained the stability of the formed film and premasking was essential to maintain stable visual boundaries in the restored areas. In addition, digital techniques such as colorimetric analysis and depth profiling were empolyed to objectively evaluate the degree of visual integration and the preservation effectiveness of the treated surfaces. This study proposes an effective alternative to full repainting by focusing on partial restoration strategies for localized damage. These approaches contribute to the preservation of the material and historical integrity of outdoor painted sculptures, especially when large-scale interventions are impractical.

야외 철제 조각 작품은 외부 환경에 노출되어 있어 부식이 진행되며 구조적, 시각적인 손상이 일어난다. 이에 따라 페인트 도장층 손상에 대응하기 위한 부분복원 방법을 제시하고, 각 복원 방법의 실용성과 한계를 정량적으로 평가하였다. 복원 방법으로는 적색 페인트 철제 시편을 대상으로 녹 코팅제와 방청제를 병행한 아크릴 물감 및 페인트를 활용한 방법, 도장층 접착 보존처리법 총 3가지 를 적용하였다. 실험 결과 기존 페인트 복원은 인공열화 후에 가장 안정적인 결과를 나타냈다. 반면, 아크릴 물감 복원은 불안정한 색상 손상률과 표면 요철이 관찰되어 야외 적용이 어려울 것으로 판단 되었다. 본 연구에서는 부분복원 후 작품의 안정성을 평가하기 위해 디지털 이미지 기법을 활용하였 으며 색상 분석과 심도 분석을 통해 주관적 평가의 한계를 줄이고, 부분복원 후 작품의 재료적, 미적 안정성을 과학적으로 검증할 수 있도록 하였다.
