The purpose of this study is to empirically examine the impact of board operation characteristics on the organizational performance of social cooperatives, and to propose policy implications for enhancing performance and ensuring sustainability. To this end, a survey was conducted with 289 board members from 72 social cooperatives located in Gyeongsangnam-do Province, South Korea. The characteristics of board operations were categorized into formal and substantive attributes, and their influence on organizational performance was analyzed. The analysis produced the following key findings: First, the frequency of board meetings, level of board participation, and transparency of information disclosure were found to have a statistically significant positive effect on economic performance. Second, board participation, participation in board member education, and transparency of information disclosure also had a significant positive effect on social performance, with information transparency emerging as the most influential factor. Third, the findings suggest that for improving organizational performance, qualitative operational elements—such as active board engagement, education-driven capacity building, and transparent disclosure—are more critical than structural or formal components. Based on these results, this study offers practical insights for developing effective operational strategies and enhancing organizational performance in social cooperatives.

본 연구의 목적은 사회적협동조합 이사회의 운영 특성이 조직의 성과에 미치는 영향을 실증적으 로 분석하고, 이를 바탕으로 조직의 성과창출과 지속가능성 제고를 위한 정책적 시사점을 제시하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 경상남도 지역의 72개 사회적협동조합에 소속된 이사 289명을 대상으로 설문조 사를 실시하였다. 조직성과에 영향을 미치는 이사회 운영 특성은 형식적 특성과 내용적 특성으로 구분하여 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 첫째, 이사회개최 횟수, 이사회 참여도, 정보공개의 투명성과 같은 요인들이 경제적 성과에 정(+)의 방향으로 유의미한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 이사 회 참여도, 이사교육참여도, 정보공개의 투명성 등의 요인은 사회적 성과에 정(+)의 방향으로 유 의미한 영향을 미쳤으며, 이 중 정보공개 투명성이 사회적 성과에 가장 큰 영향을 미치는 변수로 나타났다. 셋째, 조직성과 향상을 위해서는 단순한 구조나 형식적 요소보다는 실질적인 이사 참여 와 교육을 통한 역량강화, 그리고 투명한 정보공개와 같은 질적 운영요소가 보다 중요한 요인으로 분석되었다. 이상의 분석 결과를 토대로, 향후 사회적협동조합의 운영전략 수립과 조직성과 제고를 위한 실천적 시사점을 제시하였다.
