The purpose of this study is to examine Donghak thought and the life of Suun Choe Je-u through the application of sociobiological meme theory and Lord Raglan’s heroic narrative analytical framework. This research analyzes Donghak thought from a memetic perspective as it emerged during the crisis situation of 19th-century Korean Peninsula, and interprets the life of Suun Choe Je-u through the structure of heroic narrative to elucidate its significance. The content of this study is grounded in the meme concept developed by Edward Wilson and Richard Dawkins, analyzing Donghak thought from the perspective that culture possesses characteristics similar to genes in terms of transmission and evolution. Donghak thought is interpreted as a cultural adaptation to address the contradictions of traditional Confucian society and the impact of Western civilization. The life of Suun Choe Je-u is examined through the application of Lord Raglan’s 22-stage heroic narrative analytical framework. Additionally, this study explores the process by which human religious needs are transmitted as memes through a sociobiological interpretation of religious transcendence. The results of this study confirm that the analysis of Suun Choe Je-u’s life through the 22-stage heroic narrative reveals approximately 15 stages of heroic structure. Elements such as mysterious birth, spiritual cultivation through wandering journeys (juyupallo), mystical communion with Hanullim(God), the founding of a new religion, and the mysterious death followed by posthumous mythologization demonstrate typical patterns of heroic narrative. The study demonstrates that human religious needs are transmitted as memes, and that Suun’s religious experiences represent manifestations of these universal cultural genes. The memes of Donghak thought retain vital relevance in contemporary times and are evaluated as cultural resources capable of presenting new civilizational alternatives in global crisis situations.

본 연구의 목적은 사회생물학의 문화유전자 이론과 레글런 경의 영 웅서사 분석틀을 활용하여 동학사상과 수운 최제우의 생애를 고찰하는 것이다. 19세기 한반도의 위기 상황에서 발생한 동학사상을 문화유전 자적 관점에서 분석하고, 수운 최제우의 생애를 영웅서사의 구조로 해 석하여 그 의미를 규명함이다. 연구의 내용은 에드워드 윌슨과 리처드 도킨스의 문화유전자(meme) 개념을 이론적 기반으로 하여, 문화가 유전자와 유사하게 전승되고 진 화하는 특성을 지닌다는 관점에서 동학사상을 분석한 것이다. 동학사 상을 전통 유교사회의 모순과 서구 문명의 충격에 대응하기 위한 문화 적 적응으로 해석하고, 수운 최제우의 생애를 레글런 경의 영웅서사 22단계 분석틀에 적용하여 고찰하였다. 또한 종교적 초월성에 대한 사 회생물학적 해석을 통해 인간의 종교적 욕구가 문화유전자로서 전승되 는 과정을 탐구하였다. 연구의 결과는 수운 최제우의 생애를 영웅서사 22단계로 분석한 결과, 약 15단계에 해당하는 영웅적 구조를 확인한 것이다. 신비로운 출생, 주유팔로를 통한 수행, 한울님과의 접령체험, 새로운 종교의 창시, 불가사의한 죽음과 사후 신화화 과정 등이 전형적인 영웅서사의 패턴 을 보여주었다. 인간의 종교적 욕구가 문화유전자로서 전승되며, 수운의 종교체험이 이러한 보편적 문화유전자의 발현임을 논증하였다. 동 학사상의 문화유전자는 현대에도 여전히 유효한 생명력을 지니며, 전 지구적 위기 상황에서 새로운 문명적 대안을 제시할 수 있는 문화적 자 원으로 평가된다.
