Zen buddhism(禅宗), the longest-surviving and most influential school of Chinese Buddhism, centers on awakening to the original mind-nature of all sentient beings. Its core teachings emphasize innate purity, self-realization, and the pursuit of sudden enlightenment. A fundamental principle within Zen buddhism is ‘Not establish on words and letters(不⽴⽂字)’. This doctrine asserts that the ultimate truth is transmitted directly from mind to mind—beyond dependency on language, texts, or conceptual discourse. Such a principle is rich in philosophical insight and lends itself to broad application across various social domains. In the context of higher education, the ethos of Not relying on words and letters offers a powerful alternative to conventional text-and language-centered teaching methods. It aims to stimulate divergent thinking, enhance learner autonomy, and facilitate dynamic interactive learning between instructors and students. This paper explores the philosophical foundations of Not relying on words and letters, revisits its contemporary implications through comparison with Western educational theories, and investigates its potential integration into university-level pedagogical practice.

선종(禪宗)은 중국 불교 가운데 가장 오래 전승되었고, 가장 큰 영향을 미친 교파이다. 선종은 중생(衆⽣)의 본래 심성을 깨닫는 것을 중심 과제로 삼으며, 그 핵심 사상은 정성(淨性)을 중시하고 자각(⾃悟)을 강조하며, 단박의 깨달음인 돈각(頓覺)을 지향한 다. 이러한 선종의 중심 개념 중 하나인 ‘불립문자’(不⽴⽂字)는 문자나 언어에 의존하지 않고, 마음에서 마음으로 진리를 전하는 가르침으로서 깊은 지혜를 담고 있으며, 사 회 각 분야에 적용이 가능하다. 대학 교육에서도 불립문자의 사상은 기존의 언어 중심· 텍스트 중심 교수법에 대한 새로운 대안을 제시할 수 있다. 이는 학습자의 발산적 사고와 자기주도 학습 능력을 고취시키며, 교수자와 학습자 사이의 역동적 상호작용을 촉 진한다. 본 연구는 불립문자의 철학적 기반을 고찰하고, 서양 교육 사상과의 비교를 통해 그 현대적 함의를 재조명하며 대학 교육의 실천적 교수 방식에 적용할 가능성을 탐구한다.
