This study aimed to explore the counseling process experienced by a faculty advisor with international students through an autobiographical narrative approach, to identify the characteristics of relationship formation processes and the development process of counselor competency. The research method adopted a mixed approach integrating Ellis and Bochner’s(2000) autobiographical narrative research with Braun and Clarke’s(2006) thematic analysis. The study analyzed 320 counseling session records with 190 international students at H University in the Seoul metropolitan area, collecting data through autobiographical writing and self-interviews. Narrative analysis was employed for data analysis, and reliability was ensured through verification by colleague professors. The main research findings are as follows: First, counseling content analysis revealed academic issues, Korean language proficiency, and career planning as the primary concerns in that order. Second, the counselor development process was identified as comprising three stages: ‘role confusion and compulsion stage,’ ‘learning and adaptation stage,’ and ‘integration and maturity stage.’ Third, nine key strategies for effective relationship building were derived. Fourth, cultural humility and commitment to continuous learning were identified as core elements of cultural competency development.

이 연구는 지도 교수가 경험한 외국인 유학생 상담 과정을 자전적 내러티브 방법으로 탐구하여, 관계 형성 과정의 특성과 상담자의 역량 발달 과정을 규명하고자 하였다. 연구 방법은 Ellis와 Bochner(2000)의 자전적 내러티브 연구와 Braun과 Clarke(2006) 의 주제 분석을 통합한 혼합 접근을 채택하였다. 2023년 3월부터 2024년 12월까지 2년 간 수도권 H 대학에서 190명의 외국인 유학생을 대상으로 실시한 320회기 상담 기록 을 분석하였으며, 자전적 글쓰기, 자기 면담을 통해 자료를 수집하였다. Van Manen(1990)의 현상학적 성찰 방법과 내러티브 분석을 활용하여 분석하였고, 동료 교 수와의 검증을 통해 신뢰성을 확보하였다. 주요 연구 결과는 첫째, 상담 내용 분석 결 과 학업 관련, 한국어 능력, 진로 계획 순으로 나타났으며, 다수의 학생이 경제적 이유 로 아르바이트를 수행하고 있었다. 둘째, 상담자 발달 과정은 ‘역할 혼란과 강박기’, ‘학 습과 적응기’, ‘통합과 성숙기’의 3단계로 확인되었다. 셋째, 효과적인 관계 형성을 위한 9가지 핵심 전략이 도출되었다: 환경적 안정감 조성, 문화적 존중의 구체적 실천(정확 한 이름 발음, 존댓말 사용), 개인적 관심 표현, 실질적 도움 제공, 상호성 기반 관계 형 성, 지속적 관심과 일관성 유지, 문화적 호기심과 적극적 학습, 언어적 장벽 극복 노력, 문화적 차이의 자원화이다. 넷째, 문화적 역량 발달의 핵심 요소로 문화적 겸손과 지속 적 학습 의지가 확인되었다.
