Purpose of Research : This study examines, from a microhistorical perspective, the life and ministry of Cho Byung-guk, a yeongsu (lay leader) in the early Korean church, to explore how faith, education, and the nationalist movement were integrated in a localized model of Christian education. Drawing on sources such as Gwanrye Holgi (Record of the Christianized Coming-of-Age Ceremony) and Jonggyo Changa Byeoljip (Religious Songs Collection), it considers the interaction between traditional Confucian culture and Western Christianity, and its implications for lay leadership and Christian education history. Research Content and Method : The study reviews Cho’s life and historical context, analyzes his integration of traditional culture with Christian faith education, and identifies features of his holistic leadership?faith formation through hymns and changa, modern school founding, and participation in the independence movement. Using church session minutes, deacons’ records, personal manuscripts, and local memoirs, it applies a microhistorical approach to interpret the broader significance of his case. Conclusion and Suggestions : Cho’s ministry illustrates the wide educational, spiritual, and social roles available to lay leaders in the early Korean church. His Christian reinterpretation of traditional rites, use of indigenous music in worship, and linkage of faith with nationalist causes embodied a holistic model of Christian education. The study calls for continued regional historical research and attention to lay leadership to enhance the indigenization and public engagement of Korean Christian education today.

연구 목적 : 본 연구는 초기 한국교회 평신도 지도자였던 영수 조병국의 생애와 사역을 통해, 신앙·교육·민족운동이 통전적으로 결합된 기독교교육의 한국적 실천 양상을 미시사적 관점에서 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 특히 「관례홀기」와 『종교창가별집』 등 그가 남긴 자료를 토대로, 전통 유교문화와 서구 기독교가 결합하는 과정에서 형성된 토착화 교육 모델을 규명하고, 이를 오늘날 평신도 지도자 양성과 기독교교육사 연구의 함의를 도출하고자 한다. 연구내용 및 방법 : 연구 내용은 첫째, 조병국의 생애와 시대적 배경을 고찰하고, 둘째, 그의 사역 속에서 나타난 전통문화와 기독교 신앙교육의 통합 양상을 분석하며, 셋째, 찬송과 창가를 통한 신앙교육, 신식학교 설립과 운영, 항일운동 등을 포괄하는 통전적 리더십의 특징을 도출하였다. 연구 방법은 교회 당회록, 제직회 사기, 개인 유고, 지역 회고록 등 1차 자료를 중심으로 한 미시사적 접근을 채택하여, 한 인물의 구체적 사례를 통해 초기 한국 기독교교육의 보편적 의미를 해석하였다. 결론 및 제언 : 연구 결과, 조병국의 사역은 초기 한국교회에서 평신도 지도자가 수행할 수 있는 교육적·신앙적·사회적 역할의 폭과 깊이를 보여주는 대표 사례였다. 그는 전통의례의 기독교적 재해석, 토착 음악 형식의 예배 활용, 신앙과 민족운동의 결합을 통해 통전적 기독교교육을 구현하였다. 오늘날 다문화·다변화 사회에서 기독교교육은 예식과 교육, 문화 변용을 어떻게 상황화할 것인가라는 과제에 직면해 있다. 이에 본 연구는 각 지역의 역사적 발굴과 평신도 지도자 연구를 지속함으로써, 한국 기독교교육사의 토착성과 공공성을 강화할 것을 제언한다.
