This study analyzes the characteristics of Japanese marriage–migrant women in Korea in relation to the types of encounters that led to their cross–national marriages, focusing on “cultural– exchange type” marriages that have become prominent since 2000. The types of encounters are categorized into four groups: (1) cases in which Japanese women themselves came to Korea for reasons such as study or employment (“woman came to Korea”); (2) cases in which the couple met in a third country, for example during language study abroad (“met overseas”); (3) cases in which Korean men came to Japan for study or employment and met their spouse there (“husband came to Japan”); and (4) cases in which couples met through social networking services or online applications (“online marriage”). The analysis was conducted by dividing the data into three categories based on attributes. First, the basic attributes of Japanese marriage–migrant women include age, educational background, length of residence in Korea, and decade of marriage. Second, family–related attributes include the spouse's age and educational background, as well as the number and age of children. Third, socio– economic attributes include the employment status and occupation of Japanese marriage–migrant women, the occupation of their spouses, household income, and the Korean language proficiency of the Japanese women. The analysis revealed clear differences based on meeting types, including disparities in the couple's ages, educational background, economic situation, number of children, employment status of Japanese marriage–migrant women, and their Korean language proficiency. This study demonstrates that the meeting types are a critical factor shaping highly diverse groups with different socio–cultural backgrounds.

본 논문은 2000년 이후 두드러지게 나타난 ‘문화교류형’ 한일 국제결혼을 대상으로, 만남의 유형별로 일본인 결혼이주 여성의 속성에 어떠한 차이가 나타나는지를 분석한 것이다. 만남의 유형은 네 가지로 구분된다. 첫째, 일본인 여성이 유학이나 취업 등의 이유로 한국에 와서 배우 자를 만난 경우(본인이 한국에 와서), 둘째, 어학연수 등으로 제3국에서 만난 경우(해외에서), 셋째, 한국인 남성이 유학이나 취업 등으로 일본에 와서 배우자를 만난 경우(배우자가 일본에 와서), 넷째, SNS나 애플리케이션을 통해 만난 경우(인터넷 결혼)이다. 분석은 속성에 따라 세 가지 범주로 나누어 실시하였다. 첫째, 기본 속성으로서 일본인 결혼이 주 여성의 연령, 학력, 한국 거주 연수, 결혼 시기이다. 둘째, 가족 관련 속성으로서 배우자의 연령과 학력, 자녀 수와 연령이다. 셋째, 사회･경제적 속성으로서 일본인 결혼이주 여성의 취업 여부와 직업명, 배우자의 직업, 가구 소득, 일본인 결혼이주 여성의 한국어 능력이다. 이러한 항목들을 분석한 결과, 만남의 유형에 따라 부부의 연령, 학력, 경제적 상황, 자녀 수, 일본인 결혼이주 여성의 취업 형태 및 한국어 능력 등에서 뚜렷한 차이가 확인되었다. 본 연구는 만남의 유형에 따라 일본인 결혼이주 여성들이 매우 다양한 사회･문화적 배경을 지닌 집단으로 구분될 수 있음을 실증적으로 보여주고 있다.
