Empress Myeongseong, the narrative goes beyond the mere narrative dimension, is an institutionalized form of collective memory, and acts as a mirror reflecting the cultural identity of Korean society. Literature historical materials and oral narratives coexist with bilateral images of Empress Myeongseong, indicating that Empress Myeongseong has transcended mere historical figures and has been positioned as a symbol of the intersection of affirmation and denial in the collective memory of the people. In other words, Empress Myeongseong is a symbolic being repeatedly reinterpreted by social context and demands in the cultural memory of Koreans, and its meaning is constantly transformed without being fixed. Therefore, Empress Myeongseong narrative is an important cultural text that clearly shows the process of storing and passing memories of a particular person in different ways depending on current social demands and discourse situations.

명성황후 설화는 단순한 구전 이야기의 차원을 넘어, 집단 기억의 제도화된 형식이자 한국 사회의 문화적 정체성을 반영하는 거울로 기능한다. 문헌 사료와 구전 설화에는 모두 명성황후에 대한 양가적 이미지가 공존 하는데, 이는 명성황후가 단순한 역사적 인물을 넘어 민중의 집단 기억 속에서 긍정과 부정이 교차하는 상징적 존재로 자리했음을 보여준다. 즉, 명성황후는 한국인의 문화적 기억 속에서 사회적 맥락과 요구에 따라 반복적으로 재해석되는 기호적 존재이며, 그 의미는 고정되지 않고 끊임 없이 변용된다. 따라서 명성황후 설화는 특정 인물에 대한 기억이 현재의 사회적 요구와 담론적 상황에 따라 서로 다른 방식으로 보존․전승되는 과정을 여실히 드러내는 중요한 문화 텍스트라 할 수 있다.
