This study analyzes the figure of Sun-ok, the female protagonist in the late Joseon period vernacular play Buksanggi, to reveal the multilayered and complex ethical discourses surrounding courtesans. Sun-ok embodies three ethical codes simultaneously: chastity, sexual desire, and the ethics of cooperative conduct (hyeopgi). She is portrayed not only as a conventional representation of a courtesan but also as a subject of desire and an ethical agent. This demonstrates that even within the male-centered performance literature of late Joseon, women could actively express emotions and ethical consciousness. In Buksanggi, Sun-ok exhibits traits of a virtuous woman who maintains chastity, openly expresses her sexual feelings, and practices practical ethics by advising male characters. Unlike Chunhyangjeon or Okdanchunjeon, however, Sun-ok does not achieve social elevation or status improvement. This diverges from the typical narrative reward structure focused on chastity, instead making the completion of inner ethics itself the narrative goal. It suggests that the courtesan figure has evolved from a one-dimensional ideal to a complex subject negotiating personal desire and moral judgment. Moreover, Buksanggi is not merely a romantic narrative. Through its critical depiction of reality by characters like O-yu, stereotyped figures such as Chim-seonbi, its spatial and scenic visual composition, and pansori-inspired expressive techniques, it reflects the complexity of sexual power structures and social desires in 19th-century Joseon. The characterization of Sun-ok represents a multifaceted portrayal of female subjectivity and ethical agency. Ultimately, Buksanggi marks a turning point in late Joseon courtesan narratives, showing that ethical structures extend beyond idealized chastity to encompass overlapping dimensions of sexual desire, cooperative ethics, and self-awareness. This study highlights the literary-historical significance of Buksanggi’s narrative strategy and its contribution to the portrayal of female subjectivity in late Joseon vernacular drama.

본 논문은 조선 후기 백화문 희곡 『北廂記』를 대상으로, 여주인공 순옥의 형상 분석을 통해 기녀 윤리 담론의 복합성을 규명하고자 한다. 순옥은 정절 ⋅성애⋅협기의 세 가지 윤리 코드를 동시에 체현하는 인물로, 전통적인 기녀 재현의 전형을 넘어서 욕망의 주체이자 윤리의 실천자로 형상화된다. 이러한 복합적 형상은 『북상기』가 단순한 애정 서사가 아니라, 백화문 희곡의 서사 전략 속에서 여성 주체 형상을 새롭게 재구성한 성과임을 보여준다. 『북상기』의 순옥은 정절을 지키는 열녀의 면모와 더불어 성애적 감정의 솔직한 발현, 그리고 남성 인물에게 협의와 조언을 아끼지 않는 실천적 윤리 를 드러낸다. 그러나 『춘향전』이나 『옥단춘전』과 달리, 순옥은 신분 상승이 라는 서사적 보상에 도달하지 않는다. 이로써 순옥은 기존 기녀 서사에서 반 복되던 정절의 보상 구조와는 결을 달리하며, 내면 윤리의 완성 자체를 서사 의 목적으로 삼는다. 이는 기녀 형상이 더 이상 단선적 이상형이 아닌, 자기 욕망과 도덕 판단을 병치하는 복합적 주체로 진입했음을 시사한다. 이러한 점에서 『북상기』는 단순한 애정 서사로 수렴되지 않는다. 작품 전 반에 걸쳐 나타나는 오유의 현실 비판, 침선비의 전형화된 인물 설정, 공간 과 장면의 시각적 구성, 판소리적 표현 기법 등은 모두 19세기 조선의 성적 권력 구조와 사회적 욕망의 복잡성을 드러낸다. 순옥의 인물 형상은 여성 인 물의 주체성과 윤리 실천 가능성을 입체적으로 재현한다. 결국 『북상기』는 기녀 순옥을 통해 조선 후기 기녀 서사의 윤리 구조가 단순한 정절의 이상화에 머무르지 않고, 성애⋅협기⋅자의식이 교차하는 복 합적 인물 재현으로 나아갔음을 보여주는 전환점이 된다. 본 연구는 이러한 지점을 통해 『북상기』가 조선 후기 백화문 희곡의 서사 전략과 여성 주체 형상화에 기여한 문학사적 위상을 조명하였다.
