This article focuses on the 18th century work Cheonyerok where a human-male-patriarch at the top of the patriarchal hierarchy becomes an animal. For the purpose of discussion, the concepts of change (變) and transformation (化) were examined in the context of East Asian languages, and the meaning of “body-becomingMR” (化) that occurs at the boundary between life and death (生死) was derived, unlike the general “body-changing (變).” In the work, the patriarch’s animal-body-becoming (化) narrated as hwajeo (化猪) and hwaeo (化魚) erases the hierarchy between the patriarch’s body and the animal body, unlike in many transformation tales targeting women or villains. This is because the hwajeo narrative and the hwaeo narrative are related to experiences at the end of life such as dementia. The patriarch’s body accepts the narrative of meeting an animal body in a life experience that cannot be avoided by any authority. In addition, the patriarchal narrative of becoming-animal-body constructs life and death, human-civilization, and animal-nature as transitional and accompanying relationships, rather than disconnected and exclusive relationships through the method of leaving.

이 글은 18세기 『천예록』에 수록된 기이담 가운데 가부장제 위계의 정점에 있는 인간-남성-가부장이 동물의 몸이 되는 작품을 대상으로 했다. 논의를 위해 동아시아 언어관 안에서 변(變)과 화(化)의 개념을 검토하고, 일반적인 ‘몸-바꾸기[變]’와 달리 생사(生死)의 경계 지점에서 이루어지는 ‘몸-되기[化]’의 의미를 도출했다. 작품 안에서 화저(化猪)와 화어(化魚)로 서사화된 가부장의 동물-몸-되기는, 여성이나 악인을 대상으로 하는 다수의 변신담과 달리 가부장의 몸과 동물의 몸 사이에 위계를 지우고 있다. 이것은 화저(化猪) 서사와 화어(化魚) 서사가 치매와 같은 생애 말기의 경험과 관련되기 때문이다. 어떠한 권위로도 피할 수 없는 생애 경험 안에서야, 가부장의 몸이 동물의 몸과 만나는 서사를 수용하는 것이다. 또한 가부장의 동물-몸-되기 서사는 여방(舁放)이라는 방식을 통해 생과 사, 인간-문명과 동물-자연을 단절적이고 배타적 관계가 아닌 이행하고 동행하는 관계로 구성한다. 이것은 기존 변신담과 결이 다른 지향을 보여준다.
