This study analyzes longitudinal changes in housework time among married men and women and identifies the structural factors driving these changes by utilizing data from the Time Use Survey, which was conducted by Statistics Korea in 1999, 2009, and 2019 and surveyed married individuals aged 30 to 50. A decomposition analysis was applied to determine whether the identified changes in housework time resulted from changes in individual behavior (actor mean) or from changes in the participating populationʼs composition (actor share). The main findings are as follows: First, housework time among married men generally increased over the 20-year survey period, while housework time among married women consistently declined across all age groups and weekdays/weekends. Second, the decomposition results revealed that the changes for men were mainly driven by increased participation (actor share), whereas reduced average time spent on housework (actor mean) was the primary factor behind the changes for women. Third, the decomposition of specific housework tasks, such as meal preparation, laundry, and cleaning, revealed consistent gender differences in terms of the contributions of each factor. This study empirically proves that the gendered structure of housework division changes through different mechanisms: increased participation for men and reduced duration for women. These findings offer meaningful insights and foundational data for developing gender-equitable work–family balance policies in the future.

본 연구는 기혼남녀의 가사노동시간 변화 양상을 시계열적으로 분석하고, 그 변화 원인을 구조적으로 규명하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 통계청의 생활시간조사자료 중 1999년, 2009년, 2019년 세 시점을 활용하였으며, 30~50대 기혼남녀를 분석 대상으로 설정하였다. 가사노동시간의 변화가 행위자의 행동 변화(행위자 평균) 때문인지, 또는 참여 인구의 구성 변화(행위 자 비율) 때문인지를 파악하기 위해 요인분해 분석을 적용하였다. 주요 분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 기혼남성은 전반적으 로 가사노동시간이 증가하는 추세를 보였고, 기혼여성은 모든 연령대와 요일에서 감소하는 경향이 확인되었다. 둘째, 가사노 동시간 변화에 대한 요인분해 결과, 남성의 경우 행위자 비율 요인의 기여도가 높아 참여율의 증가가 변화의 주된 원인으로 나타난 반면, 여성은 행위자 평균 요인의 기여도가 더 커 평균 수행시간의 감소가 변화의 주요 요인으로 작용하였다. 셋째, 음식준비, 의류관리, 청소 등 세부 가사행동 유형별 분석에서도 성별에 따른 요인별 기여도 차이가 일관되게 나타났다. 본 연구는 가사노동의 성별 분담 구조가 참여율과 시간의 양 측면에서 서로 다른 방식으로 변화하고 있음을 실증적으로 보여주었으며, 향후 성평등한 일・가정 양립 정책 수립을 위한 기초자료로 활용될 수 있다는 점에서 의의가 있다.
