Kim Kyu-dong, who was born in Jongseong, North Hamgyong Province, studied at Pyongyang University (now Kim Il-sung University) before crossing the 38th parallel to South Korea in 1948. For 63 years and 8 months, he lived in the South while looking up to the northern sky until his death in 2011. During his life, he consistently expressed the pain of national division and the aspiration for reunification in his poetry. His works often conveyed deep longing for his mother and nostalgia for his hometown. In his later poetry collection To the Elm, Kim Kyu-dong successfully harmonized ideology with artistry, transforming his personal suffering into a reflection of collective national pain and historical tragedy. While he had once engaged with modernism and surrealism in his youth, he moved beyond these trends to actively confront reality through realism, without succumbing to radical populism. To the Elm, which he devoted himself to over 15 years, stands as a monumental achievement that embodies his lifelong effort to address the issue of overcoming division. Although he passed away without ever reuniting with his parents and siblings, his literary legacy endures. By inscribing the theme of division and the pursuit of reunification into the history of Korean literature, his achievements continue to gain significance over time.

김규동 시인은 1925년 함경북도 종성에서 태어나 평양종합대학(김일성종합 대학)에 다니다가 1948년에 38선을 넘어 남쪽으로 왔다. 그는 북녘 하늘을 우 러러보며 63년 8개월을 살다가 2011년에 작고하였다. 남쪽에서 살아가면서 분단의 아픔과 분단 극복의 의지를 시로 표현하였다. 특히 어머니에 대한 그리움과 고향에 대한 향수를 감동적으로 그려낸 시편이 많았다. 김규동 시인은 말년 에 펴낸 시집 『느릅나무에게』에서 사상성과 예술성을 잘 조화시켰다. 한 개인의 아픔 토로에 그치지 않고 우리 민족의 아픔을 역사의 아픔으로 승화시켰다. 그 는 젊은 시절에 모더니즘이나 초현실주의에 경도된 시절이 있었지만 그 사조에 머물지 않고 현실에 적극적으로 참여하면서 사실주의로 나아갔다. 그러나 과격한 민중 지상주의에 함몰되지 않았다. 그는 분단 극복 문제를 시인으로서의 생 의 말년인 15년 동안 줄기차게 다룸으로써 『느릅나무에게』라는 기념비적인 시집을 완성하였다. 개인적으로는 부모 형제를 끝끝내 만나지 못하고 소식도 모른 채 임종을 맞고 말았지만 우리 문학사에 분단 극복과 통일 지향이라는 명제를 뚜렷이 각인시켰기 때문에 그의 업적은 날이 갈수록 더욱 빛날 것이다.
