During the Joseon Dynasty, the Righteous Army in Jeonbuk refers to a group that voluntarily fought against foreign aggression from the Imjin War(1592-1598) to the Byeongja Invasion in 1636. Jeonbuk State has also enacted an ordinance in 2022 and is to promote a project commemorating the Righteous Army movement. As part of the commemorative initiative, this study aims to analyze a collection of papers, books, writings, and historical materials related to the activities of the Righteous Army in Jeonbuk during the Joseon Dynasty and to outline future tasks based on this analysis. Righteous Army in Jeonbuk consisted of individuals who were either born in or had resided in Jeonbuk and who participated in volunteer military activities. However, to gain a comprehensive understanding of the Righteous Army in Jeonbuk, it is essential to organize research findings on militia activities throughout the entire Jeolla Province. Therefore, from the related literature compiled in previous research projects, materials unrelated to the Righteous Army in Jeonbuk were excluded, and searches were conducted in the Korean Studies Data Platform(kdp.aks.ac.kr) using the names of Righteous Army members from Jeonbuk as keywords. The findings revealed several key points: First, although research output gradually increased until the 2010s, both the number of researchers and the volume of research output are expected to decline during the 2020s. Second, the historical materials recorded more than 160 years after the two wars are likely to have been distorted by subsequent generations. Third, the historical materials predominantly focused on specific individuals, thereby, overshadowing the significance of volunteer army activities. Accordingly, the following tasks have been proposed for the research sector. First, active support for research is essential. Second, historical criticism should precede any research efforts. Third, research must be approached from the perspectives of post-nationalism and post-regionalism. In the section concerning the commemorative project, the following tasks were outlined. First, the establishment of a dedicated institution and a comprehensive master plan is necessary. Second, it is important to expand the category of the Righteous Army in Jeonbuk and to promote research and commemorative projects in collaboration with local governments.

본 연구는 임진왜란부터 병자호란까지 외세에 맞서 싸운 전북 지역의 의병활동에 대한 논문, 단행본, 문집, 사료 등을 정리한 목록을 양적으로 분석하고 이를 토 대로 앞으로의 과제를 제시하고자 했다. 전북의병은 전북 출신이거나 전북에서 거주하던 인물로 의병활동에 나선 인물 로 한정하여 463명의 명단을 정리하였다. 다만 전북의병에 대한 이해를 위해서는 전라도 전반의 의병활동에 대한 연구성과도 함께 정리할 필요가 있다. 그러므로 기존 연구사업에서 정리한 관련 문헌 중에서 전북의병과 관련없는 자료를 제외하고, 전북의병 인명을 색인어로 삼아 한국학자료통합플랫폼에서 검색하였다. 그 결과, 첫째, 2010년대까지 점진적으로 연구성과가 증가했으나 2020년대에는 연구자가 줄 어들어 연구성과 또한 감소할 것으로 예상된다. 둘째, 전쟁으로부터 160년 이상 지 난 뒤에 기록된 사료가 전체의 74%로, 후대에 의해 왜곡되었을 가능성이 있다. 셋째, 사료는 의병활동의 중요성과 별개로 특정 인물에 편중되어 있었다. 이에 연구 측면에서는 다음과 같은 과제를 제시하였다. 첫째, 적극적인 연구지원 이 필요하다. 둘째, 연구에 앞서 사료비판이 반드시 선행되어야 한다. 셋째, 탈민족, 탈지역의 관점에서 연구가 진행되어야 한다. 기념사업의 측면에서는 다음과 같은 과제를 제시하였다. 첫째, 전담기관과 마스터플랜이 필요하다. 둘째, 전북의병의 범 주를 확대하고 인접 지방자치단체와 연계하여 연구와 기념사업을 추진해야 한다.
