This study examines the rapid growth of experiential content in the contemporary cultural content market and explores the potential value of underutilized regional spaces—particularly unique spaces such as bunkers that have lost their military functions—from the perspective of cultural content. Within this context, the study focuses on Zombie in the Bunker, an immersive experiential content project successfully planned and operated at the Cheongju Dangsan Bunker. The research investigates how the distinctive environment of the bunker enhanced participants’ experiences and maximized content immersion. The analysis covers the conceptual intent and philosophy behind Zombie in the Bunker, the spatial design strategies leveraging the bunker’s closed and maze-like physical characteristics, the interaction dynamics between participants and staff performing zombie roles, and the key factors contributing to the success of the experience. The physical attributes of Dangsan Bunker—its darkness, dampness, and complex labyrinthine structure—as well as historical remnants of its former role as a military facility were transformed into cultural assets. Utilizing sections of the bunker for the Zombie in the Bunker experience significantly amplified tension and realism. Participants engaged in a scenario where they navigated through the maze-like bunker to escape from zombies, allowing them to directly experience vivid feelings of urgency and accomplishment. This demonstrates that idle spaces can transcend their passive role as mere backdrops and function as active stages that stimulate the senses, reinforce storytelling, and become core narrative components. Ultimately, this study provides practical guidelines for planning and implementing future experiential projects utilizing underused spaces and suggests new directions for creative spatial utilization and cultural planning.

본 연구는 현대 문화 콘텐츠 시장에서 두르러지는 체험형 콘텐츠의 성장세와 더불어 곳곳에 산재한 지역 유휴 공간, 특히 군사적 기능을 상실한 벙커와 같은 특수 공간의 잠재적 가치를 문화 콘텐츠 관점 에서 심층적으로 살펴본다. 이러한 맥락에서 청주 당산벙커에서 성공적으로 기획 및 운영된 몰입형 체험 콘텐츠인 ‘좀비 인 더 벙커’사례를 연구 대상으로 하여 벙커라는 독특한 환경이 참여자의 경험을 어떻게 고도화하고 콘텐츠의 몰입도를 극대화 하는지에 대해 알아보고자 한다. ‘좀비 인 더 벙커’의 기획의도와 철학, 벙커의 폐쇄적이고 미로 같은 물리적 특성을 활용한 공간 설계방식, 참여자와 좀비 역할을 수행하 는 스태프 간의 상호작용 방식 그리고 체험의 성공을 견인한 핵심 요인들을 다각적으로 분석하였다. 당 산벙커가 지닌 어둡고 습함, 복잡한 미로 구조와 같은 물리적 특성 그리고 과거 군사시설로서의 역사적 잔재들을 문화공간으로 바꾸고 벙커 안에의 일부 구간을 활용한 ‘좀비 인 더 벙커’ 체험은 긴장감과 현실 감을 비약적으로 증폭시키는 요소가 되었다. 참여자들은 벙커라는 비일상적이고 제한된 공간 속에서 좀 비를 피해 미로 속에서 탈출구를 찾아 나서는 과정을 통해 생생한 위기감과 성취감을 직접적으로 경험하 였음을 알 수 있다. 이는 유휴 공간이 단순히 콘텐츠의 배경을 제공하는 수동적인 역할에 머무르지 않고, 서사의 핵심적인 구성 요소이자 참여자의 오감을 자극하며 스토리텔링을 강화하는 능동적인 장으로 기 능을 할 수 있음을 보여준다. 본 연구는 향후 유사한 유휴 공간 기반 체험프로젝트의 기획 및 실행에 필 요한 실질적인 지침을 제공하고, 유휴 공간의 창의적 활용 및 문화기획의 새로운 방향성을 제시하며, 유 휴 벙커 공간의 문화 콘텐츠로 활용되었을 때 발생하는 지역시민의 체험형 문화콘텐츠 향유 향상과 지역 유휴 공간의 문화콘텐츠 발전 기여에 대한 성과를 말하는데 그 목적을 둔다.
