This study examines how dramaturgy in theatre can be expanded through the use of prompt engineering with generative AI, focusing particularly on extending the scope of creative serendipity. As human AI co-creation becomes tangible, the dramaturg’s role is shifting from primarily interpretive mediation to a core creative role within production. Focusing on three aims articulating the dramaturg’s creative agency, redefining creative serendipity from the classic serendipity concept, and specifying the application of AI prompt engineering to theatrical dramaturgy the article shows how dramaturg AI interaction can be intentionally structured to elicit and harness serendipity. The study advanced a dramaturgical creative cycle model and specifies AI assisted dramaturgical functions across three phases. conceptualizing intentional questions - triggering nonlinear generative variation through AI - reconstructing interpretive meaning. Within this framework, creative serendipity is defined as a deliberately orchestrated resource: the dramaturg designs the creative structure via prompts and couples it with AI’s epistemic unpredictability to actively induce beneficial surprises, thereby moving beyond passive or accidental serendipity. Audience participatory formats exemplified by Playback Theatre are identified as especially conducive to “live prompt engineering,” in which the dramaturg modulates flow and performer audience interaction in real time to realize immersive, embodied narratives. While the contribution is primarily theoretical and lacks empirical validation in live performance contexts, it offers actionable implications for repositioning the dramaturg as designer and pioneer of AI era theatre, and for advancing dramaturgy as an integrated framework for both theoretical discourse and creative practice. Subsequent research should test the model in live productions and gather performance and audience data to assess its practical efficacy.

본 연구는 연극예술 영역에서 생성형 인공지능의 프롬프트 엔지니어링을 활용한 드라마투르그의 창조적 우연성(Creative Serendipity) 확장 가능성을 심층적으로 고찰했다. 최근 AI의 도입은 창작자와 인공지능의 협업이라는 새로운 예술적 지형을 현실화하고 있으며 이에 따라 드라마투르그의 역량 또한 창작 현장에서 핵심 예술 주체로서 확장된 역할을 수행하고 있다. 이에 본 논문은 드라마투르그의 창의성 발현, 우연성(serendipity) 개념에 기반한 창조적 우연성의 재정의 그리고 AI 프롬프트 엔지니어링의 연극예술 적용에 주목했다. 특히 드라마투르그와 AI의 상호작용이 ‘창조적 우연성’을 어떻게 구조적으로 설계하고 실현하는지에 대해 규명했다. 이 과정에서 연구자는 드라마트루기적 창작 순환 모델을 이론적으로 제시하며 AI 프롬프트 엔지니어링에 기반한 주체적 드라마투르기의 구체적 기능을 의도적 질문의 개념화 – AI를 통한 비선형적 생성의 촉발 – 통찰적 의미의 재구성이라는 세 단계로 도출하였다. 본 연구에서 정의하는 창조적 우연성은 드라마투르그가 프롬프트 엔지니어링을 통해 창작 구조를 능동적으로 설계하고, AI의 예측 불가능한 생성 능력을 결합하여 우연성을 적극적으로 유발한다는 측면에서 기존 세렌디피티 개념을 넘어 새로운 응용예술의 효용성을 갖는다. 이러한 창조적 우연성은 관객 참여 중심의 공연 현장에서 최적화된 라이브 프롬프트 엔지니어링으로 구현될 수 있다. 예를 들어 관객이 주도하는 플레이백시어터(Playback Theatre)와 같은 사례에서 드라마투르그는 공연의 흐름과 관객, 배우 간 상호작용을 실시간으로 조율하며 몰입형 신체적 내러티브를 구현하는 데에서 주체적 역할을 수행한다. 이를 통해 드라마투르그는 창작 실천의 설계자이자 예술적 선구자로서 주체적 역량 강화가 기대되는 바이다. 다만 본 연구에서는 이론적 고찰에 치중하여 실제 공연 현장에서 검증할 수 있는 실증 사례와 데이터 부족의 한계를 갖는다. 후속 연구에서는 현장 기반의 실증 분석에 따른 논의를 병행하여 실제 적용 가능성을 보완할 필요가 있다. 이를 고려하여 본 연구는 AI 시대 연극 창작의 패러다임 전환과 드라마투르그의 역할 재정립에 실질적인 시사점을 제공한다.
