This study is a practice-based research (PBR) project that examines the creative process of a film directed and produced by the researcher. The short film explores the ambivalent and intrinsic nature of human desire by visualizing the voyeuristic gaze—the urge to observe others—through the perspectives of both the on-screen character, who embodies the dual position of subject and Other, and the audience. Grounded in psychoanalytic theory, the research analyzes the protagonist’s repressed and deficient desires, the conflicts arising in their pursuit, and the desires projected by the audience. It examines how the desires of the subject and the Other intersect and become visible. Rooted in lack and repression, these desires may surface consciously or through displacement, manifesting in harmless self-satisfaction or in narcissistic, violent, or harmful behaviors toward others. Such dynamics can distort or obscure objective truth, necessitating a contemplative stance beyond subjective viewpoints. The study employs four analytical approaches: (1) interpreting the symbolic meanings of images visualizing the spectator’s gaze—as the Other—through the psychoanalytic theories of Freud and Lacan, alongside Brecht’s concept of the Verfremdungseffekt (alienation effect); (2) analyzing the emotional symbolism of color in expressing the protagonist’s ambivalent desires; (3) investigating spatial metaphors of desire’s limits via openness and closure; and (4) examining the filmmaking process from pre-production to post-production, focusing on character direction, spatial design, and the visualization of latent desire. By critically exploring the visual articulation of human desire—where the subject is simultaneously the Other—this research offers a practice-informed and theoretically grounded perspective on cinematic visualization and directorial methodology. However, since the analysis centers primarily on visual interpretation, it has certain limitations regarding technical aspects of cinematography and editing.

본 논문은 연구자가 직접 제작·연출한 영화 작품의 창작 과정을 탐구한 실기기반 연구(PBR, Practice Based Research)이다. 단편영화 <응시(Gaze)>는 타인을 훔쳐보고자 하는 인간의 욕망적 시선을, 주체이자 동시에 타자인 극 중 인물과 관객의 시선을 통해 시각화함으로써 인간이 지닌 내재적이고 양가적인 욕망을 탐구한 작품이다. 본 연구의 목적은 창작 과정에서 시각화된 인물의 결핍되고 억압된 욕망, 그 욕망을 충족하 는 과정에서 발생하는 내적·외적 갈등, 그리고 인물을 타인의 시선으로 응시하는 관객의 욕망을 분석하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 주체의 욕망과 타자의 욕망이 어떻게 교차하는지를 정신분석학 이론을 바탕으로 고찰한 다. 인간의 내면에 결핍과 억압 속에서 무의식에 자리하는 욕망은 때로 의식적으로 표출되거나, ‘전위 (displacement)’ 과정을 거쳐 외면화된다. 이러한 욕망은 타인에게 피해를 주지 않는 범위에서 자기만족의 형태로 충족되기도 하지만, 때로는 자기 만족적이고, 폭력적이며 타인에게 해를 끼치는 방식으로 발현되기도 한다. 이와 같이 결핍된 욕망의 충족 과정은 객관적 진실을 왜곡하거나 은폐할 수 있으며, 이에 따라 진실을 파악하기 위해서는 주관적 시선에서 벗어나 관조적 태도를 유지하는 것이 필요하다. 이러한 문제의식 아래, 본 연구는 인간의 양가적 욕망과 주체·타자의 시선을 시각화하는 과정을 다음과 같이 고찰하였다. 첫째, 극 중 인물을 응시하는 타자인 관객의 시선을 시각화한 이미지의 상징적 함의를 지그문트 프로이트와 자크 라캉의 정신분석학, 그리고 베르톨트 브레히트의 ‘소격효과(Verfremdungseffekt)’ 이론을 통해 분석했다. 둘째, 극 중 인물이 지닌 양가적 욕망의 시각화를 색채가 내포하는 감성적 이미지를 중심으로 분석했다. 셋째, 욕망의 현실적 한계를 공간의 개방성과 폐쇄성이라는 상반된 공간적 특성을 통해 분석했다. 넷째, 사전제작, 제작, 후반제작의 단계로 나누어 전체 제작 과정과 캐릭터 및 공간 연출, 그리고 내재적 욕망의 시각화 과정을 분석했다. 본 연구는 주체이자 동시에 타자인 인간 욕망의 시각화 과정을 심층적으로 탐구함으 로써, 시각화 연출에 대한 실천적·이론적 통찰을 제시한다는 점에서 의의를 지닌다. 다만, 분석의 초점이 시각화된 이미지에 맞춰져 있어 촬영 및 편집 과정에 대한 기술적 분석에는 한계가 있다.
