Following the opening of the Utoro Peace Memorial Museum in Uji, Kyoto (2022) and the Osaka Korea Town Museum in Ikuno, Osaka (2023), the Kobe Zainichi Korean Life and Language Museum (also known as the Nadwuri Museum) opened in 2024 in Nagata, Kobe, linking the historical experiences of Zainichi Koreans across the Kansai region. At this time when ‘coexistence’ has emerged as an increasingly contentious issue, these Zainichi Korean museums have anchored themselves within their local communities amid the surging tides of anti-Japanese and anti-Korean sentiment. This paper sheds light on the birth of the Nadwuri Museum as the outcome of both a family photo project by Second-Generation Koreans in Japan as ‘mediating entities’ and the culmination of the ethnic education movement of Nagata, Kobe. The paper explores the Nadwuri Museum as a site of ‘inheritance’ and reflects on the meaning of multiethnic co-residence as conveyed by the Museum through the persistent questions: “Why ethnic education?” and “Why local history?” In doing so, the paper also examines the Nadwuri Museum as a space that renegotiates Zainichi Korean identity as a historical subject that has shaped both modern and local history, while fostering solidarity with other ethnic minorities and marginalized groups in Japan in resistance to discrimination and xenophobia. This study further aims to illuminate the liberatory meaning of ‘Zainichi’ and its role as an antithesis to exclusionary nationalism, as embodied in this place.

2022년 교토 우지시 ‘우토로평화기념관’, 2023년 오사카 이쿠노구 ‘오사카코리아타운역사자료관’의 개관에 이어 2024년 고베 나가타구에 ‘고베 재일코리안 삶과 말의 뮤지엄’, 애칭 ‘나들이 뮤지엄’이 문을 열어 간사이 지역 재일코리안 역사의 연결점들이 생겨났다. ‘공생’이 더욱 미묘하고 첨예한 문제가 된 가운데, 반일과 혐한의 격랑 속에서 재일코리안 뮤지엄들은 지역사회에 닻을 내렸다. 본 논문은 ‘매개하는 존재’로서의 재일 2세의 가족사진 프로젝트, 민족교육운동의 결실로서 나들이 뮤지엄의 탄생을 조명한다. 가족사진을 통한 ‘계승’의 공간으로 나들이 뮤지엄을 조명하고, 왜 여전히 민족교육인가, 왜 지역사인가의 질문 속에서 다민족공주(共住)의 의미를 고찰한다. 그리고 현대사와 지역사를 함께 써 온 역사적 존재로서 재일코리안의 정체성을 재협상하며, 일본사회 에스닉 마이너리티, 피차별집단과의 연대를 꾀하며 배외주의에 저항하는 공간으로 나들이 뮤지엄을 조명한다. 또한 이 장소를 통해 해방적 의미의 ‘재일’(在日), 배타적 내셔널리즘의 대립항으로서의 ‘재일’의 역할을 환기한다.
