This study aims to reflect on the limitations of “compassion,” which has been proposed as an alternative to the problem of pervasive hatred in contemporary society, and to explore a morality grounded in practical transactive formation. According to Martha C. Nussbaum, compassion is a form of emotion grounded in cognitive judgment that enables ethical responsibility toward others by responding to their suffering. However, compassion reveals three key limitations in practice: first, the “paradox of compassion,” in which benevolent intentions may lead to harmful consequences; second, its “bias,” which centers the perspective of the one who feels compassion; and third, its “inertia,” in which moral engagement is reduced to a fixed judgment. In response, this study draws on John Dewey’s experiental ethics to highlight the relational structure of moral action and the reconstructive nature of experience. It ultimately proposes an “open-ended morality” grounded in shared experience and transaction.

이 논문의 목적은 현대 사회에 만연한 혐오 문제에 대한 대안으로 제시된 ‘연민’에 대해 고찰하고, 실천적 상호형성에 기반한 도덕성을 탐색하는 데 있다. 마사 누스바움(Martha C. Nussbaum)은 연민을 타 인의 고통에 반응하며, 그에 대한 윤리적 책임을 가능케 하는 인지적 판단으로서의 감정으로 본다. 그러나 연민은 실천적 차원에서 세 가지 한계를 드러낸다. 첫째, 선한 의도가 오히려 선하지 않은 결과를 가져 올 수 있다는 ‘연민의 역설’, 둘째, 연민을 행하는 자의 시선에 치우친 ‘편향성’, 셋째, 고정된 판단으로 귀결되는 ‘연민의 비역동성’이다. 이에 도덕적 행위의 관계적 구조와 맥락적 재구성을 통해 ‘공동 경험 (shared experience)’과 ‘상호형성(transaction)’에 기초한 ‘열린 결말의 도덕성(open-ended morality)’을 제안한다.
