The aim of this essay is to explore the substantial connection between the artistic beauty and the moral good which we usually experience in our daily life. What does the beauty have to do with the good? Aren’t the both related to each other at all? Or are they in a certain kind of meaningful connection? Generally speaking, having a certain moral message is neither a necessary condition, nor a sufficient one for raising the aesthetic achievement level of an artwork. But we know that through the medium of such messages some works often lead us to a special state of emotional elevation, in which the moral and aesthetic factors are mixed as one body. Based on this, below I developed a series of trial arguments for the ‘substantial mediationism’ which helps me to discover the possibilities of the meaningful unification of the beauty and the good in some artworks and to reveal them intelligibly. Hereby I tried to show a few artistic examples of the creative fusion and the mutual nourishment of the beauty and the good, and with this, to concretely illustrate that the both cannot be unrelated to each other at all. If this try is proper, we could not deny that though the good is neither the only source, nor the necessary one of ‘every’ beauty, at least it can be a special source of ‘some’ beauty and thus an important incentive to artistic creation freely being chosen and materialized by artists.

이 글의 목적은 우리가 일상에서 비근히 경험하는 예술적 미(美)와 도덕적 선(善) 사이 의 내용적인 연관성을 탐구하는 것이다. 예술이 표현하는 미추와 우리 삶의 선악은 대체 어떤 관계에 있는가? 양자는 아무런 관련도 없는가, 아니면 모종의 의미 있는 연관하에 있는가? 일반적으로 도덕적인 메시지의 존재는 한 예술 작품의 미적인 완성도를 높이는 필요조건도 충분조건도 아니지만, 어떤 작품은 그러한 메시지를 매개로 도덕적인 요인과 미적인 요인이 혼융된 독특한 감정적 고양의 경지를 만들어 내는 것도 사실이다. 이것을 실마리로 논자는 미와 선이 유의하게 매개될 수 있는 가능성을 몇몇 예술 작품에서 찾아내 어 적시하는 ‘내용적 매개주의’ 시론을 본론에서 단계적으로 전개해 보았다. 이로써 논자 는 미와 선이 창발적으로 혼융하며 서로를 자양한 예술적 전범들을 보여 주고, 이를 통해 양자는 결코 무관한 것일 수 없음을 실물적으로 예증하려 한 것이다. 이러한 시도가 옳다 면, 우리는 선은 ‘모든’ 미의 유일한 원천도 필수적인 원천도 아니되, 적어도 ‘어떤’ 미의 선별된 원천일 수는 있으며, 따라서 예술가들에 의해 자유롭게 취택되고 표현되는 창작의 중요한 유인임을 부인하기 어려울 것이다.
