In the 1960s, a new group of female college-student novelists emerged in the field of Korean literature. Collectively, they produced works that can be termed ‘female college student novelist novels’, foregrounding their marginal positionalities within both the literary establishment and the broader social hierarchy. Despite the optimistic promises conventionally attached to romantic love, romance consistently appears in these works as a form of aestheticised consumption. However, such unproductive acts, persistently overwhelmed by patriarchal order, activate negative affective states such as fear, anxiety, and unease. Romance grounded in aesthetic pleasure fails to culminate in marriage or domestic stability, thus pointing towards a failed future. Nevertheless, the female subject refuses to inhabit familiar modes of attachment or to fulfill the consensual promise of a happy future. Instead, she radically pushes negative states to their extreme, playfully engaging even with negative affects to generate a state of impasse with normative conventions. Positioned as a failed figure—one that neither conforms to patriarchal ideals nor fits within regulatory frameworks—the female subject paradoxically reveals that success is achievable only through failure. The contra—dictions that arise from willingly assuming the role of a dissonant figure ultimately form the foundation for the collective identity of the female college student novelist. In this process, confessional narratives, which have been negatively evaluated for their lack of literary merit, regressive narrative style, and absence of realism, are deliberately quoted and repeatedly used in novels written by female college students in the 1960s, thereby transforming women’s writing itself into a political practice. In particular, the method of constructing one’s identity by expressing the self as “I” in the first-person present tense, including instability and variability, invalidates the modern subject, which is presumed to be singular and homogeneous. In this way, female college student novels suggest that literature can be meaningful as a performative act that explains itself by choosing to be open to repetition and quotation rather than completely subverting hegemony.

1960년대 독서 시장에 새롭게 등장한 여대생 소설가들은 제도권 문단 내 위상과 사회 적 신분 모두 경계적이었던 자신들의 위치성을 전면에 드러내는 이른바 ‘여대생 소설가소 설’을 집단적으로 창작하였다. 이들의 소설에서는 낭만적 사랑이 약속하는 낙관에도 불구 하고, 연애를 미적으로 소비하는 양상이 공통적으로 나타난다. 하지만 이러한 비생산적 행위는 부권적 질서에 지속적으로 압도됨에 따라 두려움, 불안, 초조감과 같은 부정적인 감정을 활성화시킨다. 미적 쾌락과 소비주의에 기반한 연애는 결혼과 가정으로 완성되지 못한다는 점에서 실패한 미래로 연결된다. 그럼에도 여성 주체는 익숙한 애착 세계를 영위하지 않고, 행복 한 미래로 합의된 약속을 성취하지 않음으로써 부정적인 상태를 급진적으로 밀고 나간다. 나쁜 감정들마저 유희함으로써 규범적 관습과의 교착상태를 만들어내는 것이다. 이렇듯 가부장적 이상에 부합하지 않을 뿐 아니라 규제적인 장에 부적합한 패자로서 자리하는 여성 주체는 역설적으로 성공이란 실패에 의존함으로써만 완성된다는 사실을 폭로한다. 그리고 끝내 불온한 존재를 자처함으로써 발생하는 모순은 ‘여대생 소설가’라는 정체성을 형성하는 토대가 된다. 이 과정에서 문학성의 결여, 서술 양식의 퇴행, 현실 인식의 부재와 같은 부정적 평가를 받아온 고백 서사는 1960년대 여대생 소설에서 의도적으로 인용되고, 끊임없이 반복됨으 로써 여성의 글쓰기 자체를 정치적 실천으로 전환해낸다. 특히 ‘나’라는 자아를 일인칭 현재 시제로 발화함으로써 불안정성과 가변성까지 자신의 정체성으로 구성해나가는 방식 은 단일하고 균질적이라고 전제되는 근대적 주체를 무효화한다. 이처럼 여대생 소설가소 설은 헤게모니에 대한 완전한 전복 대신 반복과 인용에 열려있기를 택함으로써 문학이 자기 자신을 설명하는 수행적 행위로서 의미화될 수 있음을 시사한다.
