In modern thought, children, who were distinguished as immature and unenlightened in contrast to adults, were newly discovered as members of the modern family, and were raised and disciplined as members of a modern nation that would become rich and powerful. Children were classified as objects rather than subjects, as another other in society. Therefore, the image of children was formed and changed under various conditions such as the political situation, regional hierarchy, and subjects of representation in Joseon during the modern period. This paper aims to examine the appearance of modern Korean children and the ways in which the image of children was visualized through various media. Through the image of children that emerged in the concept of the modern family and the image of children who were educated, consumed, and consumed as modern subjects, we will implement the modern image of Korea, and at the same time analyze and explain them by type to find the origin and genealogy of the image of children that continues to the present.

본 연구는 근대기 다양한 시각 매체의 아동 이미지를 통해 한국 아동상의 역사와 계보를 추적하며 이들이 표방한 근대의 추상적인 이념과 이상을 이미지로 재현함으로써 한국의 근대를 시 각적으로 해명하고자 한다. 오늘날 아동은 “나이가 적은 아이”로 대개 “유치원에 다니는 나이로부 터 사춘기 전의 아이”를 가리킨다. ‘아동’은 1890년대 일본을 통해 새롭게 번역되고 통용된 단어였 다는 점에서 근대성을 담보한 존재였다고 할 수 있다. 근대적 사유 속에서 성인과 대비되는 미성숙 ·미계몽의 상태로 구분되었던 아동은 근대기 가족의 일원으로 새롭게 발견되고, 장차 부국강병 을 이룰 근대 국가의 구성원으로 양육되고 훈육되었다. 아동은 주체이기보다는 대상적인 존재로 사회 안에서 또 다른 타자로 구분되었으며, 아동의 이미지는 근대기 조선의 정치적 상황과 지역적 인 위계, 재현의 주체 등 다양한 조건 속에서 조형되고 변화되었다. 한국 근대의 아동 이미지는 과 거와 미래, 전근대와 근대, 미개와 문명, 제국과 식민지 사이에서 이질적인 근대상을 표상하며, 근 대가 표방한 이념들로 조합된 근대의 구상품이었다.
