This study offers a critical reflection on Immanuel Kant’s concept of Vernunftglaube (rational faith) and his account of religion from the standpoint of Unification Thought. While Kant’s moral philosophy—centered on human autonomy and the categorical imperative—articulates a rational and public understanding of religion, his notion of rational faith remains largely confined to the realm of the ideal moral subject. As such, it insufficiently addresses human desire, emotional experience, and the existential dimension of religious life, thereby detaching the realization of happiness from empirical reality. In response, this paper explores the framework of Unification Thought, particularly its theory of “dual desires(i-seong yokmang, 二性欲望)” and the structure of the “original mind(bonsim, 本心)”, to argue that the integration of spiritual and physical desires can be actualized within the context of everyday human life. On this basis, the study contends that religious freedom is not merely a matter of individual choice in faith, but rather a fundamental existential condition for realizing a life guided by the original mind.

본 논문은 칸트의 ‘이성신앙(Vernunftglaube)’ 개념과 종교 이해를 통일사상의 관 점에서 비판적으로 성찰하고, 그로부터 종교의 자유가 갖는 본질적 의미를 도출하는 데 목적이 있다. 칸트는 인간의 도덕적 자율성과 정언명령을 중심으로 이성에 기초 한 종교 개념을 제시하였으며, 이는 종교의 합리성과 공공성을 강조하는 데 이바지 했지만, 그의 이성신앙은 욕망과 감성, 현실 세계에서의 종교적 경험을 충분히 고려 하지 못한 채 이상적 도덕 주체의 범위에 머무르며, 행복의 실현 가능성을 현실로부 터 유리시키는 한계를 드러낸다. 이에 본 논문은 통일사상의 ‘이성욕망(二性欲望)’ 개념과 ‘본심’의 구조를 통해, 성상적 욕망과 형상적 욕망의 통일이 인간의 실제 삶 에서 이루어질 수 있다는 점을 밝히고, 종교의 자유는 단지 신앙의 선택권이 아니라 인간이 본심대로 살아갈 수 있는 중요한 삶의 조건이 됨을 강조한다.
