This paper aims to closely examine the activities and historical significance of alumini from Pyongyang Soongsil School during th March 1st Independence Movement under Japanese colonial rule. Graduates of Soongsil Middle School and College played a cruical role in initiating the movement in the Pyongyang area and ultimately contributed to its expansion into a nationwide anti-Japanese struggle by linking it with activities in Seoul. These individuals participated as part of the 33 and 48 national representative and were actively involved in the production and distribution of the Declaration of Independence, the Korean national flag(Taegeuki), and underground newspapers in Pyongyang. Missionary teachers at the middle and college levels supported the movement by hiding protesting students in their homes and showing clear opposition to the Japanese authorities. The Soongsil alumni not only led demonstrations in Pyongyang but also took initiative in major protests across the country. Approximately 104 individuals from Soongsil are currently known to have participated, of whom 55 were later honored as independence activists by the Korean government. It can thus be said that Soongsil School produced one of the most organized and committed groups in the March 1st Movement.

본 논문은 일제하 3·1운동에서 나타난 평양숭실학교 출신들의 활동 내용과 역사적 의의에 대해 구체적으로 파악해 보고자 한 연구이다. 3·1운동에 계획과 준비에 있어 숭실중학과 대학 출신들은 평양지역에서의 3·1운동 참여의 계기를 만들었다. 또한 궁극적으로는 서울에서의 움직임과 연계함으로서 3·1운동이 전국적인 항일투쟁으로 발전할 수 있게 하였다. 이들은 민족대표 33인과 48인의 일원으로 활동하였으며, 평양에서는 독립선언서와 태극기 및 지하신문의 제작과 배포를 담당하는 등 3·1운동에 적극적으로 참여하였다. 중학과대학의 교사였던 선교사들은 시위에 참여한 학생들을 자신의 집에 숨겨주거나 지지함으로써 일제와 대립하는 태도를 견지하였다. 숭실학교 출신들은 평양뿐만 아니라, 전국의 중요 시위에서 시위를 주도하거나 적극적으로 참여하였다. 현재 약 104명 정도의 인원이 확인되고 있으며, 이들 중 55명이 3·1운동의 공적을 포함해 독립유공자로 서훈되었다. 3·1운동에 있어서 평양 숭실학교 출신들은 가장 강력하고 적극적인 항일 세력의 하나였다고 할 것이다.
