This study aims to improve the supplementary social studies teaching materials used in elementary schools in Gangwon Province. Social studies can be challenging for elementary students to grasp, as it involves a comprehensive exploration of the world around them. Therefore, to align with students' developmental stages, it is desirable to design the curriculum and develop teaching materials grounded in students' immediate environments and everyday experiences. To this end, the Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Office of Education has produced and distributed a resource titled 􋺷Livable Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province􋺸. Additionally, the 18 cities and counties in the region have created and distributed their own teaching materials that reflect the unique characteristics of their respective areas. However, there is significant variation in the timing, personnel, and methods used in the development of these localized materials. Issues such as overlapping content and an excessive focus on delivering factual knowledge remain persistent challenges. To address these problems, this study proposes integrating localized textbooks, establishing a collaborative system for textbook development, and encouraging the development of localized curricula at the individual school level.

사회과는 우리 주변에서 일어나는 제 현상을 종합적으로 배우는 교과이기 때문에 초등학교 학생들이 접근하기 쉽지 않다. 그러므로 학생들의 발달단계에 맞춰 가르치기 위해서는 학생들이 접하는 주변 환경과 그 곳에서 이루어지는 경험을 토대로 교과를 편성하고 교재를 개발하는 것이 바람직하다. 그러므로 강원특별자치도교육청에서는 지역화 교재 􋺷살기 좋은 강원특별자치도􋺸를 제 작하여 보급하고 있으며 지역의 18개 시·군에서도 각각 지역의 특성을 반영한 교재를 개발하여 보급하고 있다. 그러나 지역화 교재 제작 시기와 제작진의 규모, 제작 방법 등이 달라 교재별 편차가 크고, 특히 교재 내용의 중복이라든가 내용적 지식의 전달에 과도한 부분을 할애하는 것이 문제점으로 남아있다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 문제를 해결하기 위해 지역화 교재의 통합, 지역화 교재 개발 과정에서의 자치단체와 교육기관의 협업체계 구축, 개별 학교에서의 지역 화 교육과정이 가능한 마을 교재 개발을 대안으로 제시한다.
