This study investigates the educational role of Beomeosa Temple (梵魚寺) in the formation and development of higher Buddhist education in modern Korea and examines its influence on the institutional growth of the Dongguk University. Focusing on the lives and educational activities of Heo Yeongho(許永鎬) and Kim Beomrin (金法麟), two representative figures of modern Korean Buddhism, this paper highlights Beomeosa Temple’s contribution to the cultivation of intellectuals and its support system for domestic and overseas Buddhist monk students. Beomeosa Temple institutionalized modern education through the establishment of Myŏngjŏng School and the operation of local seminaries. Furthermore, through the operation of a public scholarship(公費生) system, it provided essential support for study abroad, laying a foundation for the emergence of a new generation of Buddhist scholars. Heo Yeongho, who served as principal of Hyehwa Specialized School(惠化專門學校) and the first president of Dongguk College(東國大學), sought to integrate Buddhist studies with general education and expanded the scope of modern Buddhist scholarship. Kim Beomrin, as the fourth president of Dongguk University, contributed to the institutional identity of the Buddhist-affiliated university through initiatives such as the implementation of the chongbisaeng(宗費生) system, the establishment of the Department of Indian Philosophy, and the founding of the Dongguk Translation Center and Dharma Center. By analyzing the educational activities of these two figures, this study reveals how Beomeosa Temple’s contributions extended beyond traditional monastic training to encompass social engagement and the development of modern academic disciplines. It aims to provide a foundational perspective for a more comprehensive understanding of modern Buddhist education in Korea.

본 연구는 한국 근대불교의 고등교육 형성과 전개 과정에서 범어사(梵魚寺)가 수행한 교육적 역할을 분석하고, 그 영향을 동국대학교의 발전과 연계하여 고찰한다. 특히 근대 한국불교의 대표적 인물인 허영호(許永鎬) 와 김법린(金法麟)의 생애와 교육 활동을 중심으로 범어사의 인재 양성과 유학생 지원 제도를 조명하였다. 범어사는 명정학교 설립과 지방학림 운영 을 통해 부산 지역의 근대적 교육제도를 정착시켰다. 또한 공비생(公費生) 제도를 통해 국내외 유학을 적극적으로 지원하여 불교 지식인의 양성에 핵심적인 기반을 마련하였다. 공비생 출신의 허영호는 혜화전문학교 교장 과 동국대학 초대 학장을 역임하며 보편교육과 불교학의 접목을 시도하며 근대 불교학의 지평을 확장하였다. 또 다른 공비생 김법린은 동국대학교 4 대 총장으로서 종비생 제도, 인도철학과 신설, 동국역경원, 대학선원 설립 등의 제도적 성과를 통해 종립학교 정체성 확립에 기여하였다. 본 연구는 이 두 인물을 통해 범어사의 교육 활동이 단순한 승가교육을 넘어 사회적 실천과 근대 학문 정립에 기여한 바를 밝히고자 하며, 한국 근대불교교육 의 총체적 이해를 위한 기초자료를 제공하고자 한다.
