Gyeongheo Seong-woo was a figure active in the late 19th century and early 20th century, and played an important role in the history of modern and contemporary Korean Buddhism. As a Zen master, Gyeongheo inherited the traditional Zen style of Korean Buddhism and laid the foundation for the emergence of modern and contemporary Korean Buddhism. Regarding the relationship between Zen and Buddhist scriptures, Gyeongheo focused on Seon and utilized Buddhist scriptures as a supplementary function, but on the other hand, he showed a way of developing Seon style based on Buddhist scriptures. In addition, in terms of the practice of Seon, he accepted the existing tradition of the combination of practice and enlightenment, and showed an example of Hwadu practice by putting Ganhwaseon first. In particular, in the “Song of Enlightenment” he wrote about the enlightenment he experienced, Gyeongheo showed that his enlightenment was thoroughly the Buddha of the mind. Gyeongheo’s “Song of Enlightenment” was not a lament about the dark times, but an expression of his will for the aspect of enlightenment. Gyeongheo did not consider Zen practice and Buddhist scriptures as separate, and also considered Pure Land faith important. Gyeongheo was a remarkable figure who showed various aspects such as Zen thought, the relationship between Seon and teaching, Ganhwa Seon, and the movement of Zen practice. In particular, he explored the traditions and new interpretations of Korean Buddhism with Beomeosa Temple as the background. In this way, Gyeongheo entered Beomeosa Temple and personally demonstrated his practice, enlightenment, and Zen practice, and published Zen literature, thereby promoting the development of modern and contemporary Korean Buddhism. As a result, Beomeosa Temple was able to restore degenerate Buddhism and play a leading role in modern and contemporary Korean Buddhism in the 20th century. As a result, Beomeosa Temple became an open and inclusive space for practice.

경허성우는 19세기 말, 20세기 초에 활동한 인물로서 근현대 한국불교 의 역사에서 중요한 역할을 하였다. 경허는 선사의 신분으로 한국불교의 전통적인 선풍을 계승하고 근현대 한국불교가 출현하는 데에 기초를 다졌다. 경허는 기존의 선과 교학의 관계에 대해서는 선을 중심으로 삼고 교학 을 보조적인 기능으로 활용했지만, 다른 한편으로는 교학에 근거하여 선풍 을 전개하는 방식을 보여주었다. 또한 선수행의 방면에서는 기존의 정혜쌍수의 전통을 수용했으며, 간화 선을 앞세워 화두수행의 전범을 보여주었다. 특히 경허는 자신이 체험한 깨달음에 대하여 지었던 ｢깨달음의 노래｣에서 자기의 깨달음은 철저하게 마음의 부처라는 점을 보여주었다. 경허의 ｢깨달음의 노래｣는 암울했던 당 시에 대한 통곡이 아니라 깨달음의 면모에 대한 의지의 표현이었다. 경허는 선수행과 교학을 둘로 보지 않았고, 또한 정토신앙도 중요하게 간주하 였다. 경허는 선사상, 선과 교학의 관계, 간화선, 선수행의 결사운동 등 다양한 측면에서 주목할 만한 모습을 보여준 인물이었다. 특히 범어사의 사찰을 배경으로 하여 한국불교의 전통과 새로운 해석을 모색하였다. 이처럼 경허가 범어사에 들어가서 몸소 보여준 수행과 깨달음과 선수행 의 결사와 선문헌을 간행함으로써 근현대 한국불교의 발전을 촉진하는 역 할을 해주었다. 그 결과 범어사는 퇴락한 불교를 회복하고 20세기 근현대 한국불교의 주도적인 역할을 할 수가 있었다. 그 결과 범어사는 개방적이 고 포용적인 수행의 공간이 되었다.
