This study highlights the importance of technological innovation for the survival and growth of small and medium-sized manufacturing enterprises (SMEs) in Korea. It empirically analyzes the impact of entrepreneurial orientation (EO) on technological innovation and further examines the mediating role of ESG management activities. By deepening the understanding of the relationship between EO and technological innovation through ESG management activities, this study provides strategic insights for SMEs. The key findings can be summarized as follows: First, only the innovation and proactiveness dimensions of EO had significant positive effects on ESG management activities (environmental responsibility, social responsibility, governance activities). Second, these same dimensions of EO also positively influenced technological innovation (product and process innovation). Third, ESG management activities positively affected technological innovation. Fourth, ESG management activities partially mediate the relationship between EO and technological innovation. This study empirically demonstrates that technological innovation in SMEs can be strengthened through the linkage between EO and ESG management activities. Particularly, ESG management enables firms to achieve both efficiency improvement and market competitiveness enhancement simultaneously. Moreover, the findings emphasize the limited effect of risk-taking, suggesting that SMEs should maintain a spirit of challenge while implementing rational and systematic risk management strategies to maximize innovation performance.

국내 중소 제조기업의 생존과 성장을 위한 기술혁신의 중요성을 조명하고, 기업가적 지향성이 기술혁신에 미치는 영향을 실증적으로 분석하였다. 특히, ESG 경영활동을 매개변수로 도입하여 기업가적 지향성과 기술혁신 간의 관계를 심층적으로 분석함으로써, 중소 제조기업이 지향해야 할 전략적 방향성을 제시하였다. 가설검증 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 기업가적 지향성 중 혁신성과 진취성은 ESG 경영활동(환경적 책임 활동, 사회적 책임 활동, 지배구조 활동)에 유의미 한 정(+)의 영향을 미쳤다. 둘째, 기업가적 지향성 중 혁신성과 진취성은 기술혁신(제품혁신, 공정 혁신)에도 정(+)의 영향을 미쳤다. 셋째, ESG 경영활동은 기술혁신에 유의미한 정(+)의 영향을 미 쳤다. 넷째, 기업가적 지향성과 기술혁신 간의 관계에서 ESG 경영활동이 일부 매개역할을 수행하 는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 중소 제조기업의 기술혁신이 기업가적 지향성과 ESG 경영활동의 연계를 통해 강화될 수 있음을 실증적으로 보여준다. 특히 ESG 경영을 통해 기업의 효율성 증대 와 시장 경쟁력 강화라는 두 가지 목표를 동시에 달성할 수 있음을 확인하였다. 또한, 연구 결과 는 위험감수성의 제한적 효과를 강조하고 있다. 이는 중소기업이 혁신성과를 극대화하기 위해서는 도전 정신을 유지하되, 합리적이고 체계적인 리스크 관리 전략이 필요하다는 점을 시사한다.
