Amid the accelerating global aging process, senior tourism has emerged as a key pathway to promote active aging. However, its underlying psychological mechanisms and moderating effects remain underexplored. This study aims to uncover the pathway through which senior travel motivation influences subjective well-being (SWB) via travel experience, while examining the dual moderating role of aging expectations. It also challenges the paradigm of cultural determinism in gerontological research. Grounded in the theories of active aging and socioemotional selectivity, this research develops a cross-cultural two-stage model. A mixed-methods analysis was conducted based on survey data from older tourists in China (n＝203) and abroad (n＝207), incorporating structural equation modeling and cross-cultural validity testing. Findings reveal a positive “motivation → experience → SWB” pathway, with both positive and negative aging expectations exerting significant and contrasting moderating effects. Cross-cultural comparisons indicate that while cultural context shapes the types of travel motivation, the core mechanism remains robust across cultures. Theoretically, this study extends the boundaries of active aging theory by uncovering the psychological value of tourism as a non-traditional form of engagement. Practically, it offers evidence-based guidance for developing segmented senior tourism products and interventions aimed at reshaping negative aging perceptions.

전 세계적인 고령화가 가속화됨에 따라 시니어 관광은 활기찬 노화를 촉진하는 핵심 경로로 부상하고 있다. 그러나 그 심리적 작동 메커니즘과 조절 요인에 대한 연구는 아직 미흡한 실정이다. 본 연구는 시니어의 여행 동기가 여행 경험을 매개로 주관적 안녕감(SWB)에 영향을 미치는 경로를 규명하고, 노화 기대의 이중 조절 효과를 분석 하고자 한다. 또한 노인학 연구에서의 문화결정론적 패러다임에 도전한다. 본 연구는 활기찬 노화 이론과 사회정서선택 이론에 기반하여 문화 간 2단계 모델을 구축하였으 며, 중국 내 고령 관광객(n＝203)과 해외 고령 관광객(n＝207)을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하고, 구조방정식 모델링 및 문화 간 타당성 검증을 포함한 혼합연구방법을 적용 하였다. 분석 결과, ‘여행 동기 → 여행 경험 → 주관적 안녕감’으로 이어지는 긍정적 경로가 확인되었으며, 긍정적·부정적 노화 기대는 상반된 방향으로 유의한 조절 효과를 나타냈다. 문화 간 비교 결과, 문화적 맥락은 여행 동기의 유형에는 영향을 미치지만, 핵심 메커니즘은 문화에 관계없이 일관되게 작동하는 것으로 나타났다.이론적으로 본 연구는 관광이라는 비전통적 참여 형태가 지닌 심리적 가치를 밝힘으로써 활기찬 노화 이론의 경계를 확장하였다. 실천적으로는, 시니어 관광 상품의 세분화 개발 및 부정적 노화 인식을 재구성하기 위한 개입 전략에 근거 기반을 제공한다.
