The Benefit Corporation (B-Corp) movement in South Korea aims to integrate social and environmental objectives into corporate missions. However, a significant number of firms fail to renew their certifications. Thus this study explores how the articulated corporate purposes of certified South Korean B-Corps differ from those that have decertified, suggesting that the sustainability of B-Corp status is contingent upon the fit between the B-Corp model's demands and a firm's specific strategic orientation and operating context. An analysis of 42 companies' purpose statements using Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) reveals distinct thematic orientations. Certified B-Corps tend to articulate purposes emphasizing Environmental Sustainability, Social Impact & Global Standards, and Product & Innovation—themes indicating a strategic fit for firms whose global or broad stakeholder orientation aligns beneficially with comprehensive B-Corp standards. In contrast, Decertified B-Corps often articulate purposes concentrating on Market Services, Impact Investment & Environment, and Assistive Technology & Services, suggesting an operational, market-driven, or niche focus where the universal B-Corp requirements may create a misfit or offer limited contextual advantages. These divergent articulations highlight that the viability of B-Corp certification is contingent upon the alignment between its globally-oriented, resource-intensive demands and a firm's specific strategic focus and market realities. While purpose statements alone do not fully capture these complex dynamics, the observed differences provide insights into the initial strategic orientations and the degree of fit with the B-Corp model, suggesting that decertification often reflects a fundamental misalignment between the certification’s universalistic framework and the particularistic needs of the firm, rather than merely a reactive adaptation to challenges.

한국의 비콥(B-Corp)은 사회 및 환경 목표를 기업의 사명에 통합하는 기업을 말한 다. 하지만 인증을 마친 상당수의 기업이 비콥 인증을 갱신하지 못하고 있다. 본 연구 는 인증을 유지한 한국 비콥과 인증을 포기한 비콥의 기업 목적이 어떻게 다른지, 그 리고 이러한 차이가 기업들이 직면하는 다양한 지향점과 잠재적 긴장 관계(tension)에 대해 무엇을 시사할 수 있는지 분석한다. 42개 기업의 목적 진술에 대해 LDA (Latent Dirichlet Allocation) 텍스트 분석을 시행한 결과, 뚜렷한 주제적 지향성이 나타났다. 인증 비콥은 환경 지속가능성, 사회적 영향 및 글로벌 표준, 제품 및 혁신을 강조하는 목적을 명시하는 경향을 보였으며, 이는 전반적이고 글로벌 지향적인 이상과의 연계성 을 반영하는 것으로 볼 수 있다. 반면, 인증을 포기한 비콥은 시장, 서비스, 임팩트 투 자 및 환경, 보조 기술 및 서비스에 초점을 맞춘 목적을 주로 명시하며, 이는 보다 운 영적, 시장 중심적 또는 특정 비즈니스적 지향성을 시사한다. 이처럼 서로 다른 기업의 목적 선언문은 글로벌 비콥 표준과 요구사항을 이행하려는 노력과 즉각적인 운영상의 생존 또는 특정 시장 요구에 집중하려는 노력 사이의 잠재적인 긴장 관계를 암시할 수 있다. 기업 목적 선언문만으로는 이러한 복잡한 역학을 완전히 파악할 수는 없으나, 관 찰된 차이점은 기업이 핵심 목표를 공개적으로 어떻게 소통하는지에 대한 통찰을 제공 하며, 이는 진화하는 이해관계자의 요구에 따른 기업의 전략적 반응을 잠재적으로 반 영하는 것일 수 있다.
