With the deepening of economic globalization and widening regional technological gaps, firms are increasingly expanding their R&D activities abroad to leverage global knowledge resources. This study analyzes the impact of R&D internationalization on the innovation performance of Chinese multinational listed firms, focusing particularly on R&D intensity and diversity. Using panel data from 131 A-share listed firms between 2009 and 2022, the analysis reveals that both R&D intensity and diversity show a significant inverted U-shaped relationship with innovation performance. This suggests that while initial R&D internationalization fosters innovation, excessive levels may hinder performance due to management complexity and local adaptation challenges. Furthermore, the study examines the moderating effects of formal and informal institutional distances between China and host countries. The results show that formal institutional distance constrains innovation at low levels of internationalization but can play a positive role at higher levels. Informal institutional distance, reflecting cultural differences, contributes to creating innovation opportunities when firms overcome cultural barriers and integrate diversity. This study offers theoretical and practical insights into the complex inter-action between international R&D strategies and institutional environments, and it suggests that future research should explore industry-specific analyses and incorporate more refined institutional indicators.

경제 세계화 심화와 지역 간 기술 격차 확대 속에서 기업들은 점점 더 해외로 R&D 활동을 확장해 글로벌 지식 자원을 활용한다. 본 연구는 중국 다국적 상장기업을 대상으로 R&D 국제화가 혁신성과에 미치는 영향을 분석했으 며, 특히 R&D 집중도와 다양성에 주목했다. 2009~2022년 131개 A주 상장기업 패널 데이터를 활용한 분석 결과, R&D 집중도와 다양성 모두 혁신성과와 유의한 역 U자형 관계를 보였으며, 이는 초기에는 혁신을 촉진하지만 일정 수준을 넘어서면 관리 복잡성과 현지 적응 문제로 혁신성을 저해할 수 있음을 시사한다. 또한 중국과 주재국 간 공 식·비공식 제도적 거리의 조절 효과를 검증한 결과, 공식적 제도 거리는 낮은 국제화 수준에서 혁신성을 제약하지만 높은 수준에서는 긍정적으로 작용할 수 있었으며, 비공식 제도 거리는 문화적 차이를 극복하고 다양성을 통합할 때 혁신 기회를 창출하는 데 기여함을 확인했다. 본 연구는 국제 R&D 전략과 제도 환경 간 복합적 상호작용에 대한 이론·실무 시사점을 제공하며, 향후 연구에서는 산업별 분석과 더 정교한 제도 지표가 필요함을 제안한다.
