Romance scams have become a serious social problem worldwide, as they have become more sophisticated with the proliferation of digital environments. This study uses Whitty's(2013) romance scam model and Kim-Seo's(2019) six-stage analysis to compare and analyse the typical patterns and stage characteristics of romance scams. Whitty's model describes a typical progression from initial approach, trust building, money demands and blackmail, highlighting a repetitive pattern of psychological pressure on the victim. Kim-Seo's six-stage analysis, on the other hand, reveals the perpetrator's strategy in more detail, from the pre-crime stage to the post-crime behaviour. Through both methods, this study identifies the structural features of how romance scammers manipulate and extort money from victims in stages. The findings suggest the importance of public-private partnerships and international coordination, the need to expand victim protection and education programmes, and the need to monitor new types of crime using the latest technology. However, there are limitations, including a limited number of cases, a lack of quantitative data, and a lack of discussion of technological responses and psychological rehabilitation of victims. Future research needs to complement the diversity of cases and quantitative approach with an in-depth discussion of technological countermeasures and victim support. This study contributes to the structural understanding and prevention of romance scams and provides a basis for building a safer society in the digital environment.

로맨스 스캠(Romance Scam)은 디지털 환경의 확산과 함께 정교화되며 전 세계적 으로 심각한 사회적 문제로 대두되고 있다. 본 연구는 Whitty(2013)와 김효신·서준배 (2019)의 연구를 활용하여 로맨스 스캠의 전형적인 패턴과 단계별 특징을 비교·분석하 였다. Whitty(2013)의 로맨스 스캠 모델은 접근, 신뢰 형성, 금전 요구 및 협박으로 이 어지는 전형적인 진행 과정을 설명하며, 피해자를 심리적으로 압박하는 반복적인 패턴 을 강조한다. 반면, 김효신·서준배(2019)의 분석은 범죄 준비 단계부터 실행 후 행동까 지 보다 세부적으로 범죄자의 전략을 드러낸다. 본 연구는 두 분석 방법을 통해 로맨스 스캠이 단계적으로 피해자를 조종하고 금전을 갈취하는 구조적 특징을 확인하였다. 이를 바탕으로 공공·민간 협력 및 국제적 공조의 중요성, 피해자 보호와 교육 프로 그램 확대, 최신 기술을 활용한 새로운 범죄 유형 모니터링의 필요성을 시사하였다. 그 러나 사례 제한성과 정량적 데이터 부족, 기술적 대응 방안 및 피해자 심리 회복에 대한 논의 부족 등 한계를 지닌다. 향후 연구는 다양한 사례와 정량적 접근을 보완하고 기술적 대응책과 피해자 지원 방안을 심층적으로 다룰 필요가 있다. 본 연구는 로맨스 스캠의 구조적 이해와 예방 방안 마련에 기여하며, 디지털 환경에서 보다 안전한 사회 를 구축하기 위한 기반을 제공하고자 한다.
