This study provides for the scientific diagnosis of the preservation condition of the interior decorative painting (dancheong) of the main hall of the Jeonju Gyeonggijeon and to provide fundamental data to establish a systematic plan for conservation and management. To this end, an environmental assessment, a damage condition survey, infrared thermography, optical investigation, and stratigraphic analysis of the paint layers were conducted. The interior environment was found to be highly humid, with significant temperature fluctuations, creating conditions that could cause material degradation and detachment of the paint layers. Most components exhibited complex deterioration, with damage that was particularly severe to the structural members, bracket sets, and ceiling. Infrared thermography and optical imaging effectively detected damaged areas and repaired traces not easily visible to the naked eye. Further, stratigraphic structures and differences in compositions of the pigments revealed patterns of overpainting in individual components. This study’s findings provide a basis for the interpretation of the deterioration and painting characteristics of the dancheong of this building and are expected to serve as foundational data for the diagnosis and management of traditional dancheong.

본 연구는 전주 경기전 정전 내부 단청의 보존 상태를 과학적으로 진단하여, 향후 체계적 인 보존⋅관리 방안 수립을 위한 기초 자료를 마련하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 보존환경 평가, 손상 상태 조사, 적외선 열화상 촬영, 광학 조사, 채색층 층위 분석을 실시하였다. 내부는 고습하고 상대습도의 일중 편차가 커 채색층의 물성 저하와 박리⋅박락 등 손상을 유발할 수 있는 환경으 로 분석되었으며, 대부분의 부재에서 복합적인 손상이 확인되었고, 특히 체목부, 공포부, 천장부 에서 두드러졌다. 적외선 열화상 및 광학 조사는 육안으로 식별이 어려운 손상 영역과 보수 흔적 을 효과적으로 검출하였다. 또한, 채색층의 층위 구조와 안료 조성 차이를 통해 동일 부재 내 재채색 양상도 확인되었다. 본 연구는 경기전 정전 단청의 손상 및 시공 특성을 해석하고, 전통 단청의 보존 진단과 관리체계 수립을 위한 기초 자료를 제공할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.
