This article recognizes the psychological aspects of the grievance (冤)harbored by Danzhu(丹朱) during the historically revered Yao-Shun(堯舜)era in the Kang Jeungsan tradition, along with its resulting negative global historical impact and harm, and examines the Baekje-related Mireuk content in the Kang Jeungsan tradition. I would like to conclude this article by summarizing the content that was tentatively interpreted above into several key points. First, the ‘han’ of the Baekje survivors in history, and particularly Kang Jeungsan’s thought, contains the great principle that not only the three East Asian nations but also both East and West should achieve a new era of peace and mutual prosperity through Baekje’s Mireuk faith. The Kang Jeungsan tradition illuminates the historical relationships among the three East Asian nations from the perspective of grievance(怨恨) and resolution of grievances(解冤). During an era when Western powers were invading the East, Kang Jeungsan sought to resolve the deep ‘han’ that had formed among the three nations and establish an order of mutual prosperity (相生). Regarding the relationship between Japan and Joseon, Kang Jeungsan interpreted the Imjin War (1592) as not merely Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s continental invasion on the surface, but as a manifestation of historical grievances accumulated since the fall of Baekje. Kang Jeungsan conducted the ritual work for Japan’s resolution of grievances to dissolve historical resentments and establish a new order in which the three East Asian nations would mutually prosper. Second, in the Kang Jeungsan tradition related to Baekje narratives and Mireuk thought, the Baekje-related narratives form an important axis around the content concerning the Baekje Mireuk Buddha of Geumsansa Temple, where Kang Jeungsan descended from the celestial Nine Heavens(九天) and ‘remained in spirit.’ The origin of Kang Jeungsan’s thought was in the former Baekje region, and in connection with the Mireuk Buddha of Geumsansa Temple, Kang Jeungsan declared himself to be the manifestation(化現) of Mireuk. He revealed that before his birth, he had dwelt for 30 years in the Mireuk Golden Buddha of the three-story hall at Geumsansa Temple on Mount Moaksan. Geumsansa Temple was the center of Mireuk Buddhist thought that gave new hope to the survivors after the fall of Baekje. Therefore, the narrative of Kang Jeungsan residing in the Mireuk Buddha of Geumsansa Temple contains a message of resolution of grievances regarding the ‘han’ and ‘great hope’(待望) of the Baekje survivors. Third, regionally, Kang Jeungsan’s philosophy of ‘universal joy’ (萬 人咸悅), connected to Mireuksa Temple in Iksan built by King Mu of Baekje, clearly expresses the great principle of eliminating all conflict and resentment in the ‘human world’(人世), beginning with Danzhu’s grievance(丹朱解冤). When Kang Jeungsan left the Mireuk Buddha of Geumsansa Temple and descended to the human world(降世), during his journey through the eight provinces(八道) for the salvation of the world, he reached Hamyeol and declared the earthly paradise he intended to create with the expression ‘universal joy’(萬人咸悅). In relation to historical facts, this also embodies the will to resolve the ‘han’ of the Baekje survivors who had lost their homeland and wandered in exile to Japan, opening a new ideal world of harmony and peace. Furthermore, Kang Jeungsan’s direct beating of drums in Hamyeol while calling out ‘Byeongja(丙子) Jeongchuk(丁丑)’ throughout the night symbolizes and suggests that the future paradise(後天仙境) is a world of East-West harmony and peace where all rejoice together on the foundation of Mireuk thought. The ideological innovation and mutually beneficial inclusiveness that advocated an ideal world through the resolution of grievances and the symbolism of Mireuk, as shown in the meanings related to Japan’s resolution of grievances and Baekje’s Mireuk, greatly influenced the formation of Korean society’s identity and spiritual landscape since the modern era. This spirit of trans-religious inclusiveness symbolized by Mireuk serves as a key that connects past and future eras throughout history, newly presenting to the people a world of resolution of grievances and mutual prosperity.
